Hugs my friend. Have it appraised, that way you will know if you are getting a good deal. I have kept mine. I just tossed it into a box, in the back of my closet There are a lot of places that buy old gold but be careful that they do not low ball you. That is why appraising it is a good idea

Find a local jeweler you can trust but don't take the first offer, check around. Also a pawn shop will give you quick cash for it but a jeweler will probably pay you for for it.

I had a friend sell all my gold jewelry I didn't wear any more on ebay. I went to a couple of cash for gold places first just to see. My friend sold it as gold scrap. It was a chain that kept getting kinked and earrings I never wore and IDR what else, I think my old wedding band. It was a good chunk of cash though. There were not valuable stones on them so....

I did not get an engagement ring when I was with my EX. I did use a pretty cocktail cluster ring was my wedding ring for several years until the stones kept falling out. Then I got a plain band. I decided to keep it because it isn't a traditional wedding set and I might give it to one of the kids or someone in the family later.

I need to sell mine too from my 2nd marriage. Haven't taken the steps to do that. Not sure if I'm emotionally ready to do that. It's tucked away with some other jewelry he gave me so I don't see it. In fact, haven't thought about it for months, holy cow, never thought that would happen. I wish I could just have someone do it for me.

I kept my 1st one to give to my daughter since I was married to her father for 18 years, I have some attachment to it, unlike my 2nd one. AS much as I would just like to throw it in his face, or at least off a bridge, I'm too practical for that but I have no reason to keep it. I have NO ties to my 2nd ex.

Get it appraised and ask the jeweler for a recommendation. There are plenty of estate/consignment places that will sell your ring for you but they will take a percentage.

Sorry you are going through this! If your ring is insured, you can call your agent and get its appraised value. When I attempted to sell my engagement ring 8 years ago, I took it to several different jewelers and none of them were willing to give me even 50% of the appraised value so I ended up keeping it. If you decide to go try to go to jewelry stores. I suggest calling them beforehand to make sure there is interest and someone with authority is there to make the purchase.

Thanks for the responses. I do sell on ebay but would never risk selling something of this value there. The motto for sellers is to never sell something you can't afford to give away - there are a lot of fraudulent buyers out there. I never thought of an estate place, I buy things at estate sales once in a while, I'll ask the next time I go to one.

Where do you go to get an appraisal? Are appraisals free?

If you know that you want to sell your ring you should have your diamond graded. Some places will do that for no charge. That will be more helpful to determine what the resale value is. Appraisals are used more for insurance purposes for the replacement value (it is higher than the resale value). There is a charge for appraisals (need for insurance) if you have it done somewhere other than where you purchased the jewelry.

Thanks JWMS47 for the info. I guess I can google for places near me which grade diamonds. Don't know if I have the receipt, it was purchased over 30 years ago.

Definitely do not take the first offer! I went to a place that buys gold, jewelry etc. and was offered $200. I had the original grading/appraisal and sold it to a jewelry store for $1000.
