Diverticulitis Support Group
Diverticulitis is a common disease of the bowel, in particular the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed. Diverticulitis most often affects middle-aged and elderly persons, though it can strike younger patients as...
Most people that I have communicated with are worse than I have been. I've lived with Diverticulitis for 25 years that I remember, although I am sure mine was inherited. When I was first diagnosed I would take the antibiotic pills and was immediately better. The last 3 years before I retired, my job got horribly stressful. I was finding my attacks were coming every 3 months. The only symptom I ever had was my stomach swelled up like a basketball and I felt like I was going to explode. Sometimes it sort of snuck up on me. I never missed a day of work. After I retired, I realized 2 YEARS LATER, that I hadn't had an attack since I left my stressful job. That was when I realized that stress triggered my attacks.
I really liked my Dr. back then, but I sure wish he would have told me to go on a liquid diet during an attack, but like most Dr's. he didn't know.
If I feel the slightest bit of a pain, or just something not right, I will go to a liquid or really low fiber foods. No raw veggies, especially broccoli and kale for me.
You have to learn to listen to your body. As long as you have symptoms, I would stick to the liquid diet. If after eating food and the pain comes back, go back to liquids and don't eat what I caused the pain. You may need low fiber foods for a couple of weeks or more to be on the safe side.
As far as you going back to work------it all depends on you, and how you feel.
I wish you the best of luck!!!
