Diverticulitis Support Group
Diverticulitis is a common disease of the bowel, in particular the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed. Diverticulitis most often affects middle-aged and elderly persons, though it can strike younger patients as...
It could be the medication didn't do the job and you need more OR it could be that you tried to eat food with fiber in it to soon. Some people need to wait up to 4 weeks after an attack before starting to introduce foods with fiber back into the diet. You should still be on the Mayo Clinic Diet for Diverticulitis, which is a low fiber diet. Also, eating a large meal can cause pain. Stick with meals about the size of half a sandwich until the infection is gone. Good luck, I hope you feel better real soon.
I was also thinking that maybe They didn't give me the medication for long enough. It was 9 days, but this attack was so much worse then my very first attack. I have also been careful about eating and truthfully I didn't eat much until a day or so ago. I had a mini pizza and some cookies my mother made. Aside from yesterday everything I ate was like plain chicken breast and rice or potatoes.
The only other thing I did differently was to take some pepto bismal for an upset stomach. I usually don't take that and haven't for years but my tummy felt a little upset. I did notice that the next day it kinda constipated me. I have taken it in the past and never it did that before though.
9 days should be long enough for the meds, but there are people who need another dose. Stress is horrible for Diverticulitis so try and not worry too much. If the pain gets worse, don't hesitate to go back to the Dr. Stay with the plain chicken breast , potato, rice, pasta, eggs. Yogurt would be good cause the antibiotics kill all the good bacteria also. I hope you are better in the morning!!!
I don't know but maybe it was a combination of the medication not being long enough and maybe I do have some intolerances that I didn't know about. I do think that also maybe the pepto had a hand in how I am feeling because I became constiapted after wards and I am never ever constipated. If anything I have a problem with going too much.
If the pain doesn't get any better then I will see my doctor today or tomorrow. It is 3 am where I am anyway so I kinda have to wait since I have no desire to wait 8 hours in emergency. Thankfully though the pain is no where near as bad as it was a month ago. They actually had to give me morphine. Right now it's sort of a tender spot low in my belly.
If there is no infection, maybe spending a day on clear fluids and then following the Mayo Clinic diet will help the pain.
We often get pain after an attack has subsided because it is still inflamed and sensitive. Following the Mayo Clinic diet will give your colon a rest and allow it to heal before having to deal with fibre -which may irritate it.
Slowly, slowly is the way to go to avoid recurring pain after an attack. Hope you feel better soon
Given the fact that you may be reacting to the gluten, I would modify the Mayo Clinic Diver diet if I were you and steer clear of gluten if you can. Gluten seems to aggravate my diver. I had a major attack after pizza and more problems after pie.
The pain is not much today as it was last night thankfully. It's no longer a constant pain just a achy feeling if I poke myself in the tender area. Hopefully it's not a new infection and I just irritated myself. Anyway I will see what tomorrow will bring. If worse I will go get another prescription. I really hate to take the cipro and flagyl again because the last time by the end of taking it all my joints ached and my hips were killing me for some reason.
Everybody is different and things affect people differently.
I will reply with a situation i just finished.
Had an attack about 3 months ago, which i was hospitalized for for a week. The attack came in about 2 weeks after I finished a weeks worth of meds to combat an attack.
While in, they didnt put me on meds as i had no fever, but i did not eat or drink for the week, I was on the ice chip diet the entire time. They wanted me totally dried out.
About a month ago I went for the scope. The follow up visit said it looked great in there, so to speak, everything looked fine.
Then about a week ago, mainly do to stress, I had a wild attack. So I did what I always do, I stop eating and just drink water or peppermint tea. And that is it, for about 3-4 days.
This generally fixes me up.
I have had many attacks over the last few years, twice been hospitalized, but not had the surgery.
It gets tiring, analysing everything you eat, but it could always be much worse.
So when the cramps/pain hit. Start on the Tylenol and water diet.
Once food gets out of your system, stay on the Tylenol when you need it.
Hope that helps, it almost always helps me.
I am in the same place as you are as far as attacks go. When I retired from my stressful job, my attacks that I was getting every 4 months like clockwork totally quit. That is when I figured out my attacks were caused by stress. I eat anything and haven't had an attack in a long time.
I was on another site for years and I have read so many horror stories about other peoples attacks, that ended up in ER with a perforation or other complications without having much pain or not running a fever.
One of our long time posters who pops in here once in awhile who has had every complication that you can have with Diverticulitis says she believes she had such a hard time, from all the scar tissue that was formed from not taking antibiotics when she felt they would have done her some good.
The only thing I have learned that is a fact about Diverticulitis is that everyone is different.
I was just talking about you. I hope you don't mind. Thanks so much for popping in.
All from not being given antibiotics when I needed them!
