I have consulted with a 2nd gastroentrologist regarding my re-occuring diverticulitis attacks and the need for surgery. Because I live in the greater NYC area there were many to choose from to go see. I received a number of recommendations from doctors that I know and I chose a 2nd who seemed most likely to provide me with an objective second opinion.
This 2nd specialist strongly recommended that I go forward with the same surgery that the 1st specialist said I needed to have --- a laproscopic colon resection. They both felt I should have had this surgery by now.
They both fear the next flare up (or the one after that...) could be MUCH more serious than the "uncomplicated" (the medical term used --- the severe pain, nausea, fever, and awful side effects of the antibiotics sure complicated my life for 2+ weeks each time) attacks I have endured so far ---> the increasing and very real risk of peritonitis, abscess, fistula, etc.
They both stressed that not having a colon resection in the short term will mean that my life will be at a much higher level of risk of very serious "complicated" diverticulitis attack-related problems or death in the long term. They both feel I should let them schedule the surgery in the next few months.

I want to Do It...I had an Abscess...my gastro Doc. said the Abscess was at 2cm...just small...well...it was STILL Considered a complicated case...and Good LORD was I Sick, and for alot Longer then 2 Wks. more like several Months...Both from the Diverticulitis Attack & Then from the Treatment..developed Gastritis from the Meds...eating became a CHORE.
Had my Scopes done...they said they could tell I had went rounds with Gastritis...but that the Initial Infection healed up Nice...no further Treatment needed..
So then WHY after 6 months do I STILL get Shooting Pains thru that Area ? I can Tell EXACTLY where the Abscess had been...I have Nightmares about a Growing Fistula bworking its way to my Nether Reons...or out to my Skin...YES...It Can In Fact Happen...
I want this OUT of Me...IF I were You I would JUMP on the Chance to Find a Surgeon that Makes you Feel Safe/Secure...and just Get it Done !!
