Weekly Weigh-In (May 11) Sitting Less

How to Reduce the Effects of Sitting All Day
Sitting too long is linked to problems like back pain, poor circulation, heart disease, diabetes, and fatigue. The goal isn’t to avoid sitting completely — it’s to break it up often.
Simple ways to sit less:
- Get up every 30 minutes, even for 1–5 minutes.
- Walk during phone calls or meetings.
- Use a standing desk if possible.
- Stretch your neck, hips, shoulders, and back regularly.
- Take a short walk at lunch.
- Do quick exercises during breaks (stairs, squats, marching in place).
- Improve posture while sitting:
- feet flat
- shoulders relaxed
- screen at eye level
- Be active after work too — walking, chores, light exercise all help.
Helpful targets:
- Aim for at least 15–30 minutes of movement daily.
- More movement throughout the day is better than one workout followed by hours of sitting.
Biggest takeaway:
Frequent movement breaks matter more than perfection. Even small bursts of standing, stretching, or walking can help reduce the health risks of prolonged sitting.

One of my physicians who I had virtual appointments with years ago always reminded me of this and we even got up during our appointment to stretch. Here's the original article if anyone wants to check it out.

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...
