South Beach, & others like it, are based on a 40-30-30 split for your macro nutrients, they are considered "moderate carb diets". 40% of your calories come from carbs, 30% from protein & 30% from fat. The idea is that every time you eat, you make sure this is the balance on your plate. Obviously, different foods will allow a different amount...for example: half a piece of toast is the carb equivalent of 1 cup of broccoli...so you can see that you will want to keep grains & processed carbs to a minimum so that you don't end up hungry all the time & eating foods that offer limited to no nutritional support.
The "induction phase" of SB is ridiculous in my opinion. It is extremely low carb so that you will drop weight very quickly in the first 2 weeks...but the short term nature of it does make it like any other fad diet - & we know how those turn out! I'd say start with phase 2, if you're interested in following it.
If you are going to have any success with it, I would strongly suggest you read the book & online info about it first. Carefully consider if this is a way you are prepared to eat FOR LIFE. You cannot go on this type of program, lose weight, & then keep it off if you only plan to revert to what you do now once you meet your goal weight. You can make adjustments after you have been on it for a while, you'll know what works best for *your* body after a few months. I, for example, eat about 20% fat & 20% protein with the other 60% coming from carbs because that is what works best for me...& it keeps me lean & where I want to be.
I hope this helps some!
