Hello all. I have been on DS since November but this is the first time I have visited this group. I am overweight and have been doing weight watchers since the end of September. I am down 20 lbs so far, about 80 more to go. My question to you isn't really about me so much as it is about my son. My son is 13 and in the 8th grade. He is 6'3" and 270lbs. He is very active, plays select baseball does shot put and disk as well as football. He tends to eat to self soothe when he is dysregulated, I am sure he gets that from me. He wants to lose weight and has asked me to let him do the Atkins diet. I was planning to look into it this weekend but on the way to work this morning I heard a lady call in on the radio and talk about how she lost 120 lbs in a year. She said she went to Metabolic Research Center and it was very similar to the Atkins diet. I called and set up an appointment for them to meet with me and my son but they would not even give me an estimated amount of what the cost would be so I am assuming this is going to be very expensive. I would gladly find a way to pay for it, if it works for him, as his self esteem is more important to me. I just wanted to see if anyone out here has tried this and if so, what did you think of it? Were the results what you expected? Any other ideas for him? He refuses to go to WW with me. We keep him as active as we can and do not keep junk food in the house, only on special occasions such as holidays or if he has a friend over. It's hard to control what a teen eats and I have found that the more I harp on him, the more he will eat so I have backed off considerably.

You and your son have my compassion. For a 13 year old to be 6'3" tall and 270 lbs. is incredibly difficult. He definitely needs counseling. Until you address the emotional eating (the self-soothing with food), no diet plan no matter how excellent and expensive, is going to work long-term. Pay for the counseling first! God bless.

Thanks. He was in therapy for a couple of years but it was for behavior disorders related to his learning disabilities, ADHD and ODD. He has refused to go to counseling since Spring and we never did get to his weight issues. I have been thinking about counseling for him for his eating, but I am not sure how to get him to go. Last 2 times I took him to therapy he just sat there and refused to talk. I truly believe that when he comes to terms with these issues his eating habits will improve. In the meantime we will continue to try to keep him busy and I am putting together an Atkins diet menu for him to start tomorrow. he wouldn't go to the Metabolic Research center yesterday for the initial consultation. He said he doesn't need strangers telling him he's fat. i tried to explain that they would never do that as they are in the business to help people lose weight and be healthier.

Me and my husband did Metabolic Research for a while. You will go in fo ryour counseling session and they will outline everything on where your body is and where they would like to see it be. You pay a fee that is good for however many weeks they set you up for. So the more weeks, the bigger the fee is gonna be. You also have to buy protein drinks to drink, they also offer some bars and stuff down the road after a certain amount of days you have been on the diet. They are not cheap, but if you stick to the plan, it works! My only problem is the lists of foods you get to choose from for your meals, I am such a picky eater, that I only would eat a few of the foods and I got sick of it fast. I've also done weight watchers and had good results from that if I stuck to it and wrote down my points. I also did the game on diet recently. It works good too, but we found we were way to busy right now so it didn't work with my lifestytle at the moment. Good luck to you. I know it's a lot easier to do with suppport from other people.
