If you like the idea of doing shakes for a diet, I would suggest using protein shakes with no sugar in them. They carry these at a lot of grocery stores or vitamin stores like GNC in various flavors. I think these are healthier than slimfast because they have way less sugar and more protein. This makes them more filling and less fattening so you can even have more of them if you need to. Then you can have a "sensible dinner" like chicken and vegetables. Add in some healthy fat like olive oil or nuts.
You could try this out for about a week and see how it goes. If you see results, this might work for you.
For exercise, I would add some kind of strengthening stuff. Bodyweight stuff like pushups are good as is weightlifting. Start small and work up. There's lots of good info on the web. Basically, anything that makes you stronger without hurting yourself is gonna make you healthier and leaner.
I also like "Atkins" brand shakes. They are the tastiest pre-made shakes in my opinion, and don't have sugar in them. The sell them at WalMart and other grocery stores.
