The difference in how I feel mentally based on died is TREMENDOUS. Any baking or sweets I consume are homemade, if I eat too many of those, I do end up feeling crazy, depressed & wanting more of them.
Hormonal balance is greatly affected by what we eat, that affects our physical health, how we feel emotionally & even affects our drive, ambition, & energy.
One of my favourite books is Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food"...I think everyone should read it...it is *not* a diet book, it is a book about food.
Ravediet.com is a great little site. They have a book and video called Healing Cancer from Inside Out, that explains what makes cancer grow in the body, and it's the rotten American Western Diet.
He recommends that people switch from eating that, which is 42% protein, 51% refined and processed foods, and 7% plants - to a diet that is 95% plant and 5% animal. or less animal.
He recommends no refined food, no animal products, no vegetable oil as it is refined, and exercise. I'm living that 95% of the time.

I've also cut out all the man made oils lately. Just coconut and butter, and feeling less hungry. I'd been craving coconut for a year, and now I feel very satisfied. I think that eating stuff with a list of chemicals on the side of the package, means you are eating differently than the way God created us to eat. We are supposed to eat real foods - from the earth.
