Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. According to a company news release, the pen features a digital display that allows patients to record and review their last 16 insulin doses, including the priming doses. The function may be of particular relevance during the development of a treatment plan requiring accurate recording of mealtime doses and times.
A smaller version of the pen (HumaPen Luxura HD) was approved by the FDA on January 9, 2007, and is expected to be available by prescription in April. Beginning after the first unit, the reusable device is capable of delivering from 1 to 30 units of insulin lispro in half-unit increments. The product may be of particular use in children and other diabetic patients who do not require large amounts of the therapeutic hormone.
