I haven't been testing. But want to start again. Have heard various times to test. Is one more correct than the others?

Count from the first bite.
Count from the moment you finish eating.
Wait two hours to test.
You can test at one and a half hours.

Too many ideas. What is correct?

I will test 2 hours after eating, when I wake up before breakfast and at night when I go to bed. I will pick a different meal to test after, one day breakfast, another maybe lunch, etc

The standard test is 2 hours after eating.

When to test depends on what you are wanting to know. If you want to know how a certain food affects your levels test about an hour after your first bite. If you want to test your levels to make sure they went back down after eating your last bite wait 2-3 hours (really the difference in time between first and last bite shouldn't be that long of a period... If it is you might be grazing and you need to check that).. Good practice is testing upon waking up before you eat or drink anything and that will give you an idea of how your sugars are overnight (mine are generally higher first thing in the morning).. If you are on insulin than you need to check before every meal. If you are only on oral meds than after eating like I said above depending on what you are wanting to know determines when you test after meals. Than test before bedtime at least 3 hours after eating the last bite (mainly if you are on insulin).

But you can always call and ask your doctors nurse when they would prefer you to be testing especially if your doctor is wanting you to report your numbers to them. As you already know there are several methods to testing and many doctors have different views on test times so it's always best to check with your doctor when they would prefer.

What I would like to add is get an idea of what your doctor wants your range to be at the time of testing.

My doctor wants my morning testing (the fasting one) to be under 120.
Two hours after a meal, my doctor wants my sugars to be under 160.....and so forth. Every doctor has a different idea as to what your blood sugars should be as each diabetic is different and it depends on whether you are insulin dependent or just using oral meds.

My mom get's wigged out that I test often.....she only tests once a day. We are very different diabetics even tho we are both type 2 and both on oral meds. My sugars drop very unexpectedly and I need to keep an eye on that.....especially since I drive.

MsBlank... isn't that the truth.. My new doctor says he's ok with my numbers being in the 150 range.. I'm like NOT ME... His A1C goal is less than 7 and miy goal is much lower. But I do trust him. He's a great doctor.. He's worked with family and friends and I know he knows his stuff.. But still I have my goals.. :)
