Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
You need to change your mindset and educate yourself on food and you'll see that you don't have to eat boring gross foods. I've been diabetic since I was 21 which is almost 20 years now. I educated myself greatly on the disease and the foods. It all changed three years ago when I was put on insulin, and again I educated myself. I have MANY health issues, and all require different actions to keep them in check, but you have to arm yourself with knowledge. It's ok to have a pity party for yourself, but don't live in it. At some point you check yourself and say OK. I'm going to find out what I have to do and by golly I'm gonna choose to do it and find ways to make it work for me. Good luck..
My A1c is at 14 right now because I've been seriously ill for a few months. It's been there before when my medical "stuffs" are bad and I have to work at the situation.
However, I have been able to get 14 down to 8! I stay on top of it because I live with it. So do you, right?
I know personally that it is a live long disease. I eat better because of it. I'm overweight now by about 40 lbs.; I'll lose some of it. I hope to work at losing ALL of it.
Yeah, Diabetes sucks. Yet we Diabetics have to keep at it.
I cook almost 90% of the time. It helps if you cook. Then you know what you're putting into your mouth/body.
My problem is that I have to concentrate on my portion control. See, I am a really good cook. I like MY cooking a lot! I sometimes eat a double portion - I know, bad girl! Then I make up for it. There are a lot of ways to do that. Trust me, I'm becoming somewhat of an expert as far as making-up for double portions.
I have help from the American Diabetes Association too. There are many websites to get the expert advice as well as REAL people advice too.
Don't get me wrong, Daily Strength & of course, THIS support group are terrific. But, I think everyone does research on the side!
Good luck.
My Daughter had Gestational Diabetes and it continues...my Grandkids are 18 and 13. So, she's had DM now for 19 yrs. She goes to College full time and works full time. She dances and walks miles for exercise. She's dedicated to not letting Diabetes defeat her.
I kept on my PCP to check for Diabetes for apx 12 years before I got it. I KNEW it was coming! I do water walking 4 X's a wk. and I work out on upper body machines, free weights and yoga. I am 65 yrs old and have had DM for over 20 yrs now (like jody0365).
At my Park District where I do these things, they have assistance by real well-trained staff people to help some of us get onto a device for working out and getting exercise - their bodies' way!
Again, I wish you luck!
Luck won't help you 100%, though.
Take care. I hope you beat Diabetes numbers and the weight!
I am choosing to educate myself, reach out for any help or support I can find and deal. i got a lot of life left to live and don't want to spend it being 'sick'.
