I was just wondering if I should be going to an endocrinologist now that I have diabetes. My current doctor is a specialist in internal medicine. She is the one diagnosed me with diabetes. I don't mind too much how she has been helping me with it, but I'm not 100% sure she is on the right track with it all the time. Should I be going to an endocrinologist from now on instead? Then...do I just go to the endo for the diabetes and to my regular doctor for everything else? Or, could I just go to the endo as a regular doctor? I don't want to get confused with too many doctors...I just want one. What do I do?

Hi Pippilotta! Boy, all the options you have! I live in a really rural area and there are no endocrinologist for 100 miles. So, I let my primary care manage things. But, what I did do last year, was take a day trip to the city and saw an endo for a one time consultation. He reviewed my meds and labs, set up a plan and sent it to my doc. Best of both worlds! If I ever run into trouble, I can also go back and have another consult with the endo or even let him take over care. At that point, I'd let my primary keep control over everything else, like annual exams, etc. And they would still be in the loop with the specialist care. Hope that helps.

It won't hurt at all to go to the endocrinologist. The two doctors can work together to provide the best care for you. I have both, my doctor manages my diabetes and when the thyroid is into control, she will start to handle that for me also, with reports to the endo

I too have an endocrinologist doctor but mine is for my thyroid, I have graves disease. I was just recently diagnosed with this diabetes. I go see my primary care doctor on Monday for followup from hospital stay and this diabetes. I don't know what he will say in regards to treating me for this but I to would just like to have one. I think having an endocrinologist handle your diabetes is a good idea. They specialize in that area more than what a primary care doctor does. I know from experience because I have been seeing an endo doctor for over 10 yrs for my graves disease and he sends everything to my primary care doctor so that he is aware of what is going on. I know when I go see him on Monday I am going to ask for an endo doctor to take care of mine. Good Luck

An endo is a wonderful person to have on your diabetic team. An internal doctor has to know a little about a lot of things, where as an endo knows a lot about a few things. See if your doctor can recommend one. They should work together and share any test results you have done with each other. I'm fortunate enough to have doctors who are all part of the same medical facility, so my medical history is available to all of them.

An endo is who helped me! I liked my internist and went to him when my endo moved his office 45 minutes away. But I started having problems and now drive the 45 minutes one way every three months to see him. I feel so much better.
