"Normal" A1c

I read recently that the "normal" range for A1c depends on the lab that performs the test because there is more than one way the test can be run. That didn't sound very likely to me, especially considering there are A1c conversion tables all over the internet. Has anyone else heard that?

I'm fairly new to the site and to diabetes but I've never heard of the lab differences.

my dr does it right there.. takes 5 minutes?.. so i dont know...

My doctor also does the test right in the office while I am there. All I know is he wants me to stay under 7.0

My last A1c was 6.0 and my Dr. was pleased. This is where I get confused, even thou I'm feeling fine. My home reading can be up and down, I take my list of my readings to my Dr. Then he orders lab work and I'm fine. As I said this can be confusing.

I don't think it matters what lab that does you A1c. I would think they would test it all the same way.
I know that when I test my BS at home it's suppose to be under 7.0 and any higher is not good.
But when my doc does my HbA1c test once every three months it can fall between 6.0 and 9.0 and still be okay.
My thery is this--every doc has his own way to judge if your numbers are okay.

I have heard it needs to be under 7.0, but that is all I have heard, no changes here.

The A1C results are the same units uniformly so an A1c

To tell the truth I have no idea what any of you are talking about. No one has ever mentioned that A1c thing to me and my doctor never has mentioned it never ever. So I heard about the 3 month lab work from somewhere, but I don't think anyone has taken "MY" diabetes very seriously. When I give my list of BG readings from home, he just ups my Metformin and finally gave me the Glipizide. But what is being discussed here, is news to me. I will do a search on it. I am inthe same boat as learn..
I only know about the Blood glocousse levals. Mine are all over the place lately.I will ask my doc about the A1c next week when go for my checkup.

What would a reading of 398 do to an A1c test? Today my BG was that high. About an hour and a half ago. I felt tired, and I was upset and was crying for some serious emotional problems in my home. Would the stress cause it to go that high??? Oh, I took 1000mg Metformin and 5 mg Glipizide, it was down to 213 in half of an hour. Been an hour since I checked it last and it is 207. I thought it would have been much lower by now. Will drink some more water.

a 398 will give you a little higher reading on the a1c test & yes stress can effect your reading , it may go higher n it may go lower
