"they" say that metformin doesn't cause the lows but i've seen plenty of people in this group that will attest that it can. Definitely let your doc know, you're meds probably need adjusting. I've personally had less problems with the Extended Release formula, which i still take in split doses- 1 pill morning and night.

What do "they" say causes this? It just funny that I've had Type 2 for over 8 years now and never had this happen until this summer!

When you are healthy, and you start to go lower, your liver will add some sugar to your system and your pancreas will add some insulin.

When you are on metformin, your liver doesn't dump as much. that is why this is happening.

If you are having the lows around lunchtime, it might be a good idea to have about 15g carb snack between breakfast and lunch, will help to ward off the lows until your meds are checked.

I had a low of 20 a few weeks ago, did not have enough carbs for the day.

This disease changes and progresses. The idea of a snack around 10 is a good idea. Also what are you having for breakfast? If you are not having enought carbs for breakfast then that could account for the low. Also ask the doctor if it is possible to take your medformin one at each meal instead of all at once during the morning

I take Metformin,but my doctor has me taking one in the morning and one in the evening.I would never take 2000mg of metformin at once.Try splitting it up and as Gayle said having a snack.. =)

The VA has stated that low BG is more serious than high.
Definitely relate this "44" - scary IMO, worse if this continues for a time.
Have some instant carbs on hand and continue with the testing.. When I have a "strange" feeling (dizziness, I think), its apple sauce time.

Thanks everyone! I do usually eat yogurt and maybe fruit around 10:30-11 but it was still dropping like that. I go to the Dr. on Monday so I will ask.

I think I have been on the Ext. Release before but those were the horse size pills so I didn't take them like I was suppose to. Just couldn't get them down without choking and/or gagging!!

Make sure to balance your foods. Carbs give your blood sugar a quick rise...protein makes it distribute more evenly and for a longer period of time.

I am not a fan of metformin, but if you must take it, be sure to check in with your doctor regularly. As was mentioned in a previous post, diabetes isn't a static disease. It is constantly changing with various factors like weight, stress, food, hormones, age, exercise.

Ok Starbucks Addict, what do you eat for your snacks? So the yogurt and fruit are too many carbs? Is that what you are saying? I am also doing Weight Watchers and I have always been confused about the diabetes exchanges!!

I'd say the metformin created the drop, sounds like you are on too much.

(Out of curiosity, have you tried not taking the metformin...see if you cantrol with diet and exercise?

So I had my dr. appt this morning and he cut that 3rd Meformin pill!! Of course, he said that is not what is causing it. I don't care I just want it to stop happening!! He said it could be some of the other meds I am taking for it.

Sometimes my BS drops too and sometimes I do not understand the cause. I seem to be eating properly. For me I start having problems when my BS drops to 74. I know every time because I am shaking unconrollably and immediately have some carbs which corrects the problem quite. I would be afraid to know what would happen to me if my BS dropped as low as some of you have stated. I eat a little about every two hours which keeps me pretty stable at all times. There just doesn't seem to be an answer to my lover BS when it happens.

What kind of snacks to yall eat between meals? I need some ideas that will keep my BS stable.
