Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
It depends on you as to whether or not you go on medicine (Metformin is the usual/standard meds the doctors start out with. It's not compatible for everyone, but as for me, it is working well.
Regardless, getting your blood sugar under control depend so much on your diet and exercise. However, diet and exercise are not always enough. I say it won't hurt to give it a try without meds, but you will HAVE to stick to an eating plan designed for diabetics. You might want to see a dietitian to help find the right plan for you (this is going to take time and be a trial and error thing).
The best thing to do is go with the NO white complex carb rule (no white rice, white potatoes, pasta, and white bread......also no fried foods). Portion control is also important.
My mom is also diabetic, but just watches portion control and eats everything and is fine. If I eat white complex carbs.....I feel very ill......so I have to stay away from the complex carbs....however....I splurge from time to time......like the other day.....I ate 5 french fries :)
I haven't eaten pizza since I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I have found substitutes that are tasty and satisfying and I don't miss pizza or pasta that much. I love feeling better and more energetic better.
It is a different lifestyle and that is how I look at it.
I take Metformin as well as a cholesterol and High Blood pressure med and I have never felt (or looked) better :)
I also take a host of vitamins as per requested by my doctor.
I sometimes feel like a walking drug store...lol.
I also test myself 2-4 times a day....so I lug around my testing kit as well.
You can do this.......It just takes some time and trial and error on what works best for you.
This site is wonderful....lot's of great peeps to help you out or to let you vent.
You just have to eat a 'healthy' diet, watch your carb intake, and portion sizes and as MsBlank1 says to watch.
Good luck. Let us know how you are doing.
