'Caught in childhood': Obesity isn't only caused by too much food, a study says
Obesity can be caught in childhood and isnt only caused by eating too much, scientists say.
A study has found evidence that children who are exposed to a coldlike virus are more likely to be overweight later.
The highly-infectious virus spread by dirty hands has long been known to cause sore throats and sniffles.
However, a growing body of research suggests it also attacks fat cells, causing them to multiply and triggering a massive gain in weight.
Researchers at the University of California in San Diego examined 124 children aged eight to 18 for antibodies created when their immune systems were exposed to adenovirus 36.
The antibodies were found in 15 out of 67 obese children, compared with just four out of the 57 non-obese youngsters, the researchers report in the journal Pediatrics.
Children who had been exposed to the virus weighed 50lb more on average.
The latest findings add to a growing body of scientific evidence that obesity is a condition or illness that can be caught rather than being solely caused by lifestyle.
The researchers are unsure how much of the childhood obesity epidemic sweeping Britain and the rest of the Western world can be blamed on the virus, rather than poor diets and lack of exercise.
Study leader Dr Jeffrey Schwimmer-said: Many people believe that obesity is ones own fault or the fault of ones parents or family. This work helps point out that body weight is more complicated.
It is time that we moved away from assigning blame in favour of developing a level of understanding that will better support efforts at both prevention and treatment,
These data add credence to the concept that an infection can be a cause or contributor to obesity.
At least 11million men and nine million women are thought to be overweight in the UK, while 12million people are clinically obese.
If recent increases continue, it is estimated a third of adults and half of all children will be obese by 2020.

I guess anything is possible, but I have a hard time with this one. It is interesting though. I still think technology plays a huge role in the obesity epidemic - especially with kids. The video games alone are keeping kids inside instead of outside running around. Despite the ever changing strains of viruses and colds, people/kids were not as heavy as they are today 30 years ago.
Wish they were more specific on the type of virus.
Then back to the computer!!!!!I don't thinks kids hear "Go outside and play today!!"
