Insulin Shots

So today because my blood sugar was 328 when I went to the doctor's today, we have deceided to do a sliding scale insulin shot. I am on prednisone and it keeps shooting my numbers up. Does anyone have advice on this new thing I have to do, do and I need to watch for any symptoms or signs from giving myself shots, are there side affects? Hopefully I will be able to go down on them when I go down on the prednisone.

Your Doctor should have told you how to use the sliding scale. I use it, but yours may be different. If he told you to use the sliding scale he had to give you some idea. Prednisone will raise blood sugars ever time...I been there, it is hard to regulate.

yea i only go back on the insulin when i get the prednisone boost. which i HATE to high HELL!!!! i hate insulin shots. they hurt so much and i feel the medicine go into my arm and it stings. idk if anyone else gets that.

with me it was anytime my bs was under a certain number at the time i was able to decrease mine by 3 units. idk what insulin youre on. im lowered on the prednisone this sunday so im not on insulin anymorre FOR NOW. but it sucks knowing that when i do get bumped up i have to be on that. SMH! GRR evilsone i call it lol

Nee, sweetie, shoot in the tummy..it does not hurt and enters your blood stream faster. I get the nice little fatty part..no feelin'..Try it.

He did tell me how to use it. I just wanted to hear everyone's experiences with having to do it. I take 5 units before 2 of my biggest meals.

i tried that in the beginning but i do the victoza shots in the stomache. it says nto to do them in the same spot.
i bruise too easily. i dont take the insulin alot only when im bumped up on the prednisone which happens when i get sick. which hopefully will stop soon if this recent surgery i had helps.

hopefully soon i'll even be off the victoza

I take 1 unit for every 7 carbs, I count carbs and weigh everything I eat: example IF my reading was 150, I use the scale 30/100(some people use (40/100)your Doctor should have told you that. I take one unit for the 50 and then what every carbs are in my meal. My last A1C was 6.4, I have been Diabetic for 40 years.

Ask your Doctor to be sure, I am sure he is an Endocrinologist, right. They should tell you..you pay them good $ for their advice.

i dont do the insulin like that. im on lantus solostar the pen needle stuff
i also dont go to an Endocrinologist anymore. my last one wasnt as aggressive or anything and there arent any in my area. none that go to the hospital i go to etc., and none that take my insurance.
not in a good area with drs. im lucky to even have a good pulmonologist with my asthma close by

I also carb count and use a sliding scale for my insulin. It's not hard once you get the hang of it. I would suggest getting a carb counting book like Calorie King. It's like $10 at Barnes & Noble, but it has just about everything you can think of listed in it, including a ton of restaurants and fast food joints. My carb to insulin ratio is 1 unit for every 10g of carbs. I also will correct with an extra insulin dose if my post-meal numbers are too high. Usually 1 unit for every 12 points I want to lower my BG. It seems to be working fairly well for me, but everyone's body is different.
