Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
Technology in general has increasingly made people physically inactive. (Computers, video gaming systems, big LCD TV's, cell phones etc. etc.)
Finding the "genetic link" is what makes the pharmaceutical companies money though - and I am sure there is one, I guess.
Hi, my name is Hope and I take *#@!#%^&^ for my laziness.
Just sounds weird.
I am on the lazy side, but I know both my parents were active as anything. My dad was always at the gym, always thin. I look just like him - but fat and he has always hated me for it. He tried desperately to change me as a child and teen. I did not get my laziness from my parents genes. I got my laziness from my obesity gene (FTO). The heavier I got, the lazier I became. Now that I have lost 35 lbs, I have more energy then I have had in years and now I am more active because of it.
Don't know what think about this one.
so maybe it was Grandpa & Grandma who were the lazy blighters
Not eating and dancing all night left a lot of people with long term health problems.
There are a half million people in the UK alone waiting for gastric band
surgery and to qualify for it over here you have to be overweight by a certain amount and some are overeating to reach this target and qualify.
A strange state of affairs
My grandparents weren't lazy either. Nope - I win the prize for being the heaviest/laziest person on both sides of the family. Not for long though! =0)
And Hope is right about the technology today. I sit so much at the puter it's really sad. No one walks to the store or far cause they are afraid today they will get shot. I suppose this is why the kids are heavy and the parents are heavy and they are so worried about obesity now!!!Plus both parents work and fast food.....Just a sign of the times..what will be next???
Losy will come up with some interesting article like he always does!!!!
but it is not saying that means your parents were lazy blighter's
or bone idle
But as was mentioned when you are overweight it is more of an effort to do anything
maybe fat people don;t like to stand because of the strain on the knee's and ankels!
Type and Genes In some animal species, the shape and size of the individual's body is largely determined by the shape and size of its parents' bodies. Many scientists have explored the role of heredity in determining human body shapes. Some researchers argue that obesity has a strong genetic determinant (it tends to run in families).
They cite statistics showing that 80 percent of children having two obese parents are also obese. But why is this the case? Can you really blame your parents for your problems with weight?
o Twin Studies Studies of identical twins who were separated at birth and raised in different environments have provided us with some of the most conclusive evidence to date that obesity may be an inherited trait. Whether raised in family environments with fat or thin family members, twins with obese natural parents tend to be obese in later life. According to another study, sets of identical twins who were separated and raised in different families and who ate widely different diets still grew up to weigh about the same. So, if you are overweight, you cannot blame it all on your parents for overfeeding you as a child.
These studies contain the strongest evidence yet that the genes a person inherits are the major factor determining overweight, leanness, or average weight. Although the exact mechanics remain unknown, it is believed that genes set metabolic rates, influencing how the body handles calories. Some experts believe that this genetic tendency may contribute as much as 25 to 40 percent of the reason for being overweight.
its not that its heredity but as hope said see monkey do money
i/e Mum & Dad sitting watching TV all day makes baby grow up into a lazy lump like themselves???
If they can manipulate the "lazy" gene, I am sure they can manipulate the obesity gene, but they won't because that obesity gene is making drug companies trillions of dollars yearly.
You are right about the environmental factors playing a role. I strongly believe that metabolic syndrome and obesity go hand and hand, but what do I know. I will be asking my professor when we get to that in Physiology class.
I learned a lot about genetics in a Physical Anthropology class and let me tell you - if I was younger, I would definitely commit to a career in genetics. It is so dang interesting.
All I know is, I have been told by a few different doctors that my weight problem is partially due to having a genetic predisposition to obesity. My inactivity (environmental factor) contributed to and made it easier then ever to gain weight. I have received two recessive genes from my parents and I passed my recessive gene to my girls, and so did my husband. Now with my son, he was lucky and received the recessive gene from me cause that is all I have, but got the dominant gene for "thinness" from my husband. The dominant gene always prevails! That is how people who can eat eat eat and never gain, no matter how much they try - they received two dominant genes for the "thinness" trait. I have a neighbor who is so skinny, he needs to gain at least 20 pounds but can't - and boy can he eat. My ex-brother in law was like that too. Did I mention I hate them both? lol - Just kidding.
