Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
Most Doctors tell to you stick to a certain calorie diet.
If none of these look on line there are many sites for Diabetes 101.
Along with proper meds, you can keep your diabetes in control. I'm not saying it is easy, especially with all the junk food available in our society. But if you are determined to fight this battle, you can do very well.
Learn to read a food label, watch the carbs and portion control sizes ( carbs are sugars called complex and these are our problems. Most of us average about 35-45 carbs per meal and around 20 for a snack and do fine. Exercise is important also. try to get some each day if possible.
In time that hungerness will go away once the numbers come down to normal ranges, drink water when you get that urge.
Have the doctor refer you to a dietician to help, you don't have to obey everything they say, they also have different ideas. You can go to a pharmacy and they can show you how to use the meter, etc if you can't get the doctor's office/nurse to help you. it takes time, but you will get better. most of us test about 2-3 times a day, usually in the morning before breakfast, late at night, and then rotate one 2 hours after a meal, maybe breakfast, then lunch, then dinner.
Ask questions, keep asking until you do understand, keep notes on questions you want the doctor to answer or even us, read, know that knowledge is power and only you can take this and control it and it can be...
I eat Atkins diet snacks...I like them...high protein generally no sugar. My favorite is the Triple Chocolate treat. I also drink Atkins high protein milk shakes...yum......and no sugar.
I wlll eat something whenever I'm hungry. Still I have lost weight.
I have to see if I can't find an affordable dietician though now I am having the problem of my suger keeps dropping and I am scared to sleep for too long because I wake up shaking and sweating. I have been eating as healthy as possible.
I had one day where I ran out of oranges and when I was sweat shaking I had 6 Oreos , a brownie and half a peanutbutter sandwhich to pull my suger up to 101.
My temperature is running around 96 degrees which isn't normal for me ether...
I exersise usually two miles a day to every other day unless I feel sick and wake up shaking. The day I had the oreo's i hadn't exersised.
Our "conversation" did not last long. She said "You're old enough to know about carbs, right? Good, I will make this short, I am retiring this week; here are the very basics and some reading material. Bye."
My diabetes is still unchecked. I found a new Endo and a new PCP. I hope to find a medication or insulin I can tolerate. I sure feel rotten as of two years ago.
I'm hoping reading these posts will help me calm down and eliminate many of the issues FaireFae and I are both experiencing.
The meter showed 455 (no, that's not a typo) when I was first diagnosed. I'm showing about 180 at the morning fast now, and still in the 2's for the evening.
Still waffling on what to eat.
I never use alcohol after speaking to my dr and being told just a simple hand washing will suffice. The reason hospitals and dr offices use alcohol is because you've touched all sorts of things before they test, and it's where sick folks are... So alcohol is warranted in those places.
Here's an article about it:
