I'm just curious since I have to keep increasing from the original instructions . . . 1 Unit for each 10 grams of Carbs , this is for Novolog, the fast acting insulin, I guess it would be the same for Humalog.
When that didn't keep my numbers in check, the MD said try 1 Unit for each 7 grams and then go to 1U for each 5 grams . . . . .
Also 1 Unit for every 20 points above 120 on the meter readings has now been increased to 1 Unit for every 10 points above 120.
Do these instructions match those any one else has received?

I myself am on a sliding scale of 30/100 and I take Humalog 1 unit for every 8 grams of carbs.
My numbers were higher on those instructions than they were on the oral meds. (Switched to insulin because of the side effects of the oral meds)
She then said "try . . . . 1 Unit for every 7 grams of carbs and if that doesn't work go to 1 for 5 grams . . . . ."
My readings were usually no more than the 130's or lower on fasting, and I was trying to keep them below the 150"s 2 hrs. after a meal. (mine go back to 'normal' only after 4 or 5 hours)
Early this week, with no food, my reading hit 360. I called her after taking 2 shots of Levemir 12 hrs. apart, and the second dose of Novolog where I had dosed 1 Unit for every 5 grams of carbs and 1 additional unit for every 10 points above the 120 reading.
Her nurse told me to increase it again by 5 units. . . . . (which I had just done). . . so I told her to let the doctor know because it was so high (still in the 200's) I was going to take a Januvia 100mg and a 2mg Glimepiride and let her know what happens.
4 hours after the oral meds, my numbers were in the "normal" range again - - FINALLY - - even after a half cup of noodles for dinner.
Does INSULIN just not work on some people - - - of did my liver see the extra insulin and put out an alarm call thinking it was going into starvation mode, and release large quantities of glucose to cover the insulin ? ? ?
The NURSE (non-diabetic) at the support meeting last night, was unable to answer that, but isn't that what happens over night when our fasting numbers are off?
