Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
Thanks for the replies. In the weeks before my Dr, visit, I really fell off the wagon with my eating habbits. I was on vacation and I ate out witht the family for alomost two weeks straight, had some beers almost every night, had ice cream, and ate red meat after being red meat free for almost a year.
All I've had since I got the news form the Lab Nurse is grilled chicken and salad. I'm not even craving anything else. Again, this is a real eye opener for me and I am ready for a positive change in my eating habbits. I'm very active with my job, but I think I can add some exercise to my diet and see what I can do to turn this around. I just hope there are not some other issues causing this.
I think the standard test is a 10-12 hour fast and draw blood once.
I'm going to do that tomorrow as I just changed doctors and she wants a new perspective. An A1C can be done without fasting.
It is good to get good eating habits whether diabetic or not.
The problem we have with food today is first.......we eat waaaayyyyy too many carbs. Second and probably even worse than carbs is all the preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, and other God knows what in our foods. Don't let organic foods fool you......much of the time that is a load of crap in order for you to spend more IMO.
Fresh foods are always the best whenever possible. I spend more time in the produce section of the store than anywhere else.
I'm growing my own garden (as usual) this summer.....but am expanding it to make sure I get plenty of the good stuff becuz prices of food are skyrocketing at ridiculous rates....at a blink of the eye.
I don't eat fried foods and yet I was raised on them as my dad was a good ol southern boy and that is how he was raised.
I eat lots of veggies, moderate fruit, whole wheat bread, chicken, and yes.....red meat. I don't like fish, but will eat shrimp and crab legs. I eat snacks. I eat more now than I did before I was diagnosed and have lost around 60-70 pounds. I don't own a scale....never will.....so my doctor takes care of that for me and only tells me how much I have lost (long story).
Now that the weather has improved, I will be walking 2 miles a day again.
I find your numbers to be fair to midland....but I ain't the doctor. Each doctor has their own guidelines and ideas of what our numbers should be. I don't understand why your doctor wants to do your glucose test the way he does.....but that is an individual preference and is probably not a bad way.....just kinda weird IMO.
Just take it one day at a time and do what you can in a sensible way. Don't get too extreme.
Wishing you the best and keep us posted. Hopefully you can forgo this group and go on to live a happy and healthy life :)
However....we are here if you need us!
My wife had the test almost 17 years ago when she was pregnant with our child. I think it's for a gestational diabetes check, so thats probably from a slightly elevated number just to rule it out I'd assume.
My friend that has type 1 had never heard of the test either, but I don't know if it was because his blood work was obvious for his diagnosis or? From what I gather from the internet, this test is to rule out people that are on the border line. Since I have high blood pressure, then my cholesteral was elevated, maybe he wants the test to see where I am at.
Either way, I know I need a change, and this is the HUGE push I needed to get my eating habbits back in check.
it is better to be sure and nip in the bud. With numbers barely high it can be controlled by diet changes and exercise so if he does decide yes you are borderline, tell hom you want to try by diet and excercise. Many people can contol that way, I did for 10 years but then mine progressed, do know we are all different but do take the control
I'm doing everything I can to keep from becoming insulin dependent.....plus I would like to keep my eyesight and limbs thank you very much. LOL
This is why you test your blood to make sure you are on track. You need to work together with your doctor. You can try to lie, but your blood tests will always tell the truth.....plus the doctor kinda knows how we try to get away with things.....my doctor that has retired called me a liar to my face one time. Another time he threatened to tube me (I was anorexic)......I thought he had eyes in the back of his head.....however, he was top in his field with years of experience with us crazies!!! LOL
I treated my body horrible for nearly 4 decades. I now tell the young 'uns that their body will give back ten fold what you gave it when you are younger in your later years......so be kind. Stop smoking, drinking, over eating, staying up late, etc.
I should be a poster child for what happens to ppl that abuse their bodies in their youth!
Oy!!!! LOL
