Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
You have to look at the bright side. actually Diabetics are the healthiest folks, we have to eat right or our numbers go crazy.
Get a good diabetic book, of your choice, there are many out there. I have to say Sweet Tater fries are mighty good. Have you tried them.
Learn to cook the foods that you enjoy....in a different way.
You are not alone we all go through this.
I have learned to do exchanges. I agree with sweet tater fries....yum!!!! I use to LOVE french fries, bread.....especially garlic toast/bread......mashed potatoes and gravy.....the whole gamut of no no's. However, I have to make a decision to feel better and keep my limbs, eyesight, and a host of other things diabetics (and regular folks) face daily.
Recently I was feeling a bit deprived with the holidays coming....so I prepped my attitude and choices of foods. Decided to kick it up a bit. Popcorn and potato chips are a big no no for me. However, I found Cape Cod Salted Carmel popcorn found in the chip isle is awesome. it has 40 calories and LOW carb count and does not effect my sugars if I eat it in the afternoon and keep it to one or one and a half cups. It is crunchy (not oily) and a bit sweet :)
AND IT'S DELICIOUS!!!!
I also eat dark chocolate chips.....and sometimes dark chocolate chips with mint. I pour some in this little tiny dish that hold 1/4 cup and it it slowly.
I am not a big snacker or sweet eater.....but I do enjoy feeling like I belong among normal peeps....whatever that is...lol.
Grannie is right.....we are some of the healthiest folks.
It can take time to change up your diet. Try ADDING something healthy and in two weeks eliminate something unhealthy from your diet.
Sometimes when I am out with friends or my mom.....I take 4 or 5 french fries and eliminate the whole wheat roll.....this is a cheat, but with the exchange....it really isn't. My friends and mom (she is also diabetic) keeps me in check with limiting the 4 or 5 french fries. I don't do it often....but every now and then it is hard to stay on track.....so I allow it and it satisfies that "itch" so to speak.
You can do this....keep coming here to vent, cry.....and eventually laugh again ((((((((Hugs))))))
Bad habits are hard to break, but I've been using willpower to try to get me through it. My numbers are markedly better today than yesterday, but I'm not ruling anything out.
Thank you for the suggestions and I welcome more.
watch the fats in foods, stay away from fried foods, watch the white breads, pasta, rice potatoes. These items have starches that will hold the numbers up higher and longer. Watch portion sizes, this is important, learn to read labels. Sugar free is not actually carb free (which are complex sugars)
take this one day at a time and do this for yourself and family, for if you don't take care of yourself, you can't be there for family
and we are here, we now how you feel
