Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
As for being embarrassed...why? That is one reason I say folks you are around the most and especially work with should know your Diabetic so they can help you. There is no difference in that than someone in a wheel chair...folks help them.
One reason they sell medical bracelets and necklaces.
by law we don't have to tell but I feel if I have a medical condition that is messing with my ability to do my job, then I let them know. They were very good and handled me telling them very well, even to the point of acting like a father lol.
And do wear a medical id bracelet just in case
i saw my endo dr and she said that she thought that the stress, dehydration and fatigue along with an increase in blood sugar (because my sugars have been very tightly controlled) caused a "perfect storm". I am under extreme stress at work. I would like to purchase an id bracelet that doesn't scream "I AM DIABETIC".
But watching your numbers close at work is a good idea. I am sure stress from some of my jobs caused this diabetes to begin with. Be very careful with stress it takes a toll.
Sorry if this sounds a little hard but I know what admin people think like I worked closely with them in my career.
Just feel out the company and by law now they cannot discriminate, it is the employees who don't show they are trying to help themselves, they just don't care, that can be frustrating for the companies
Secondly, talk with your dr. about how to ensure this doesn't happen again. It might mean getting some counseling for stress, finding a aggressive hobby that lets you physically vent your stress or something like that..
Third, Have a back up plan in place for days that this happens. If you have to let everyone know that you're diabetic and need a moment then that's what you do. When I was early in my diagnosis I had a problem with lows. I can remember crawling towards the breakroom one day and a coworker helping me up and to the breakroom for a snack. She didn't hover. Once I had a cookie she left and came back in a bit.
If you're dehydrated drink. But you already know that. I just had a heart attack at 40 a week ago and reading about fellow diabetics that are under "extreme stress" worries me. I wouldn't consider my stress extreme and I'm figuring out ways to eliminate as much stress as I can. I hope you're able to do the same. My biggest and best advice is don't be the "do all" person. Deligate.
