I went in the hospital in december and they took me off my metformin.I was taking 1000mgs twice a day.
I was on a mostly liquid diet in the hospital but I thought my glucose numbers would increase without the metformin but it did not.Even when I left the hospital my numbers still stayed stable without the metformin.Now I am confused as to whether I should stay on this med.My doctor gave me a vague explanation and I now take 750mgs just for the other benefits of the drug.
Should I see a specialist to find out whether I really need this drug?Has anyone out there came off of their meds or reduced them after their numbers stabilized?

Hey Proverb,

Your doctor is just making sure that everything is all right with your blood sugars. I have heard of this happening before where someone has lost a lot of weight and/or started an exercise routine and their numbers stabilized but it is usually a while before they actually come completely off the metformin. Just to give you a little reminder though, maybe talk to your pharmacist about this as well. A lot of times, the pharmacists understand that a doctor's explanation may be more vague. There is no sin either in asking yur doctor for more detail to the explanation. I mean, after all, to control your diabetes, you have to understand what is happening right?

That is just my take on things, I would give it a while but please make sure that you ask your caregivers. You are not second guessing them, you just want to be informed!

There is something called the "Honeymoon affect" in dogs with diabetes...they suddenly have perfect numbers etc but it can rebound, as the dog owners find out and their diabetes is very similar to ours. But talk to the pharmasist and even with your doctor again

I was on Metformin at 1000mgs twice a day. I lost about 25 lbs and brought my A1c down to 6.4%. My doctor took me off the Metformin entirely. BUT I was also on Byetta twice a day at 5mcgs and have since increased that dosage to 10mcgs.
Keep a close watch on your diet and your numbers, and as the others have said talk with your pharmacist and again with your doctor.

I cut down my metformin by one pill my numbers are slightly higher now so I guess it was a honeymoon.lol

ROFL, yes doggies do get this...the honeymoon phase is basically for type 1, for whatever reason the pancreas suddenly starts to create insulin but it is temporary, there have been just a couple of this affect with type 2, but I was told it by a previous doctor this could be possible.

doggies experience the same as we do, they have emotional problems, experience highs, lows, and if a female doggie is not spayed then she will experience problems because of the hormones (I am a moderator on a doggie site for diabetes) owners have a heck of a problem at times trying to regulate, read the doggies etc..doggies must have insulin, there is no pill
