Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
Does this sound close to what they are doing to anyone else?
All of Diabetics are individuals; are bodies do things differently. All I know to do is test up to the limit that you are allowed and see what happens. Also be sure and test individual items. Some of the items will not raise your BS and therefore you might have more of it although it is higher carbs.
45 is a good number for carbs. I was told 30-40 at breakfast; 40-60 at lunch; and up to 90 for dinner...so if you had around 45 spread out during the day that would be great.
I have mentioned this is other posts but want to share with you what a wiehgt doctor told me... I had trouble thinking about carbs as sugar so he explained it like this.....for total carbs you take in divide by 4 and this is equivalent to teaspoons of sugar you just ate. So that one (1) bannana is equivelant to 7 teaspoons of sugar.
It is totally mind blowing...no wonder so many people are being diagnosed with diabetes.
Some will say you need carbs witch you do, but you get carbs in everything. Try to look for the food with good fats and carbs. try cutting out processed foods as much as possible.
Sure hope some of this helps:)
When you test a new food try 2 hours after wards. I have been told by a nurtitionist you can test 1 hour afterwards then 2 hour afterswards. I think some people start with 30 mintues , then 1 hour, then 2 hours for a new food just seeing how it rises and how fast there blood sugar drops. .
I do 2 hours afterwards.
I like what Linda says about dividing your carbs by 4 to see how many teaspoons of sugar U are eating; this really makes U stop and think, never look at it that way. but there is no way I could eat 90 carbs for Dinner My Bs readings in the Morning would be high for sure. That just shows we are all individual and different with our diabetes as we are human beings.
My Dr. and nutritionist told me to walk just right after a high carb meal too that would help the BS stay lower. They really want me to walk right after Breakfast and then Dinner ( we call it supper here in Arkansas LOL) The morning walk helps my BS all day and the evening walk helps my Fasting BS levels in the morning. They are right it realy does help.
I was Diagnose with type 2 two years ago. Like the rest here I know how frustrating it can be. I have bough foods that I could eat like a certain bread and then either my body changes or they have changed the bread some how and I can't eat it anymore and have to find something else.
I get to reading and maybe they have added cornsyrup or some kind of sugar, that was not there before . I still may be a lower carb bread and whole grains but that made the difference for me. That is how I found out I was diabetic I though I was allergic to cornsyrup. I notice when I ate something with cornsyrup in it I felt terrible and of course it is in everything processed. LOL I just did not know how I was allergic to cornsyrup. My dh and I still get a big laugh over this. I am so thankful I went to the dr. with this. The dr. said you may be allergic to cornsyrup but let me test your BS first before I send you to an Allergy Specialist. Of course this guy knew what he was doing and sure enough it is my BS. Said he suspected I had been diabetic for a while. The Dr. said he was one too and he knew how to help me help myself and it is not the end of the world.
Hope this helps. Hang in there.
This is a great place to be, I'm very impressed.
Recently my 7.2 number on a blood test told me it was indicative of having diabetes. The prior years I was pre-diabetic altho my Dr. should have been concerned but he was not. I'm a llittle surprised. But I'm not too surprised that after a year of mostly ice cream diet (sometimes for dinner); I guess all that sugar brought me over the edge. I haven't been told to test my blood sugar levels yet and my Dr. gave me the choice of medication or starting to eat a nutritional diet and resume exercising. I chose the latter and I've lost about 5 lb this month and have been feeling pretty good.
What I'm writing about though is that my SIL had just gone on a diabetic-friendly diet called "The Belly Fat Cure" by George Cruise. At first, I thought it was another kind of diet gimic, but I bought the book and it explains why you have to watch your carbs and sugars and the good/bad foods for diabetics OR for those who want to keep their weight down. In this particular diet, he tells you to keep your sugars down to 15mg or less/day and Carbs (6 portions or about 120mg/day total including snacks). He emphasizes the importance of not cutting out the carbs.
He also talks about sweeteners (the bad/good) and now I carry around a packet of Stevia with me if I want to sweeten my coffee in the AM. I also have half & half in my coffee since I was surprised to learn that it has less sugar than non-fat milk. I was also surprised that the banana that I ate once a day contained a lot of sugar and most of the juices out there. He doesn't say you can't eat a banana, but if you do, the rest of the day will limit your intake of sugars to stay under 15gm.
He has menus, carb swaps, and a list of every food imaginable with their sugar levels and carb levels as well as different brands of foods with low sugars (such as Uncle Sam's cereal).
For breakfast, I usually have cereal with soy milk every day. Now I know what milk to use and occasionally I can alter it with eggs and an English Muffin with butter. For snacks, I plan to keep different kinds of nuts around or yogurt. Dinner is more of a challenge, but some Leane Cuisines or OK and even steak, veggies & rice are OK.
It's more of a lifestyle change than a diet and after reading it through, I recommend it highly. Tomorrow, I plan to make a new shopping list so I can have these foods in my house. I'm just beginning to read labels on everything I buy. I did a 360 turn and I'd rather manage this in this way than start any medication. Hopefully I can.

Trudilu...I'm going to check out the diet you were talking about. I've read other diets by him too.
