Hello everyone. I am a 56 yo male, recently diagnosed. Not on meds yet, but Dr is threatening at next visit. My fasting sugars have been in the 96-110 range and A1C is 6.5. Doc wants it below 6. Nurse diabetes educator said I am def Type 2...no longer "prediabetic" and gave me a meter to start using. My mom died at age 70 from diabetic complications, so I know the drill and want to prevent going down the same path. Only other health concerns are obesity, which I am working on with Weight Watchers, and a case of diverticulitis resulting in surgery in 2008. My labs are not much different for the last 10 years, but new doc says "the rules have changed." I'm a little concerned that he's being a little aggressive...all of my diabetic friends would kill for a 6.5,

Do watch your doctor...yes there are some doctors who are too agressive and some who don't have a clue at times...So be proactive and keep notes and ask questions. Your fasting is fine (they say up to 100 and others say under 125) your A1C for just being diagnosed is good...Tell the doctor no meds at the moment and to give you the time to see if you can do this with diet and exercise at the moment.

My doctors say they are happy to see any A1C under 7

You need to take control of your health and you have done so, you need time to see if you can do this. Tell him you want at least 6 months to try .....if he has a problem with you being in control of your own health, maybe ask him why...or find a new doctor if you are not happy

I understand mzizgayle's point. But, I think you are wise if you take this seriously now. It can't hurt to watch your glucose level, and start making changes in diet and exercise. You can afford to make the changes gradually, unlike some folks who have to change everything right away.
