Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
Well, first of all he should give u white breads, white potatoes, white rice and of course sugars, Mzizgayle has a wonderful little speech she gives but I have been accused of not doing it right but I really like my version of it.
This is a great website and people are incredibly supportive and really give great advice. The key to controlling this disease is to watch the amount of carbs you take in and EXERCISE. Since everyone is different, monitoring blood glucose is key to getting an understanding of how foods affect him. You are already helping him by wanting to support him but there is a lot of the path that he must walk alone. One of the things I really recommend is for him to get onto a diabetes education course. His doctor should recommend one or even your insurance company. The nutritionists there and the dieticians are really great and will definitely help him.
Welcome aboard and we will all help him as well.
Big hugs,
lary
I believe a very good start to learn about Diabetes type 1 or type 2 is to read the book my Richard K Bernstein, MD.

Welcome Sossie and it is great you are ready to jump right and support your hubby, success will be gained if both of you are on the same track. Now the speach is for the newbies where I tell them to stand in front of a mirror and tell yourself I can do this, I will do this, for myself and family...Do so every day if needed.
Now for the spouses I will say don't try to be the food police to the point you are creating friction. Do know hubby will have good days and bad days, he will slip on his new way of eating, might even give you grief about cooking, he will probably get angry, frustrated, depressed, overwhelmed and maybe even take it out on you at times, but do know it is the disease talking not him so just let him voice what he may, and then give him a hug lol..
Cook the same for both you, this diet is not a "diabetic diet" but a healthy diet. With family eating the same and exercising together will make things go much easier.
Don't fall into the "cures" you will find on the internet, don't try to follow all the "diet for diabetes" books, etc...there is no cure, but control will be gained, many times trying all these diets saying "they can cure diabetes, etc etc, will basically cause problems in the long run and run your grocery bill up.
I have had this for 16 years and there are many others who are even longer, and we have managed with common sense and learning to make substitutions when cooking, eating portion control.
Ask all your questions, ask again, we will be here, I am sure his doctors will refer him to a dietician, well they should with him in the hospital, and go with him, learn together.
We are both in massive need of loosing weight and now that he has a serious reason too this will only help me keep on a diet. Of course I have to get food in the house that he can eat and will be healthy for us.
I am sure I will have lots more questions as we continue to learn.
Just take it one day at time. We're here for you.
