Hubby has been suffering with a serious toenail infection since January. He has been treated with all sort of antibotics and fungal meds with nothing working. After countless appts with the podiatrist they have decided to remove his big toenail next Monday. Has anyone had this done? If so, did you heal well and quickly?
He has been a type1 diabetic since he was 9 and has never had any foot problems until now - we are worried it may get worse.

How are his blood sugars? I am sure you know how important it is to try and keep them on target. Have you discussed this with his diabetes team? If he has an infection this will probably affect his insulin needs so it is important to tell the nurse or doctor he sees most so they can work out if he needs to change his dosage and if so, by how much etc.

Isnt the toenail stuff just so annoying, gross, and worrisome. Well good news is (if you can call it that) from looking at your listed age I am going to guess hes in his 60s? If so hes joined the ranks of many a males that arent even diabetic!
For some odd reason doctors see a huge, huge increase in fungal and toenail infections especially in men after the age of 55. For once this is something that seems to be a problem for men more than woman but still we love the crazy old fellas so it isnt much of a blessing.
But to illustrate my point all the men blood related and not blood related in my family that are over 60 have this problem. Only one of them is a diabetic. IHalf of them have had the procedure you are talking about done on at least one toe some more and only one of them had issues and it wasnt the one who was a diabetic!
What was even better yet is that after a few days of healing not only was the diabetic one feeling better but his sugar levels dropped and he needed less insulin as the infections were causing him to be more resistant.
Overall all of them have ended up with happy endings. Heres to hoping your hubby soon joins their ranks!
