Question about 14 year old son.

My son has been passing out and his sugar has been borderline low (per the doctors). I was told to monitor his sugar over the next week and what he eats (this is all new to us). Does anyone know what a teenager levels should range. My father in law died of uncontrolled diabeties so my husband and I are not liking this see and wait situation and we want to be pro active at making sure that we know what we are talking about when i go in with a list of what his tests have been. I honestly don't even know if the testing kit i have has a memory or not so i am writing them down and the time i took them. His fasting sugar today was 107. I just dont want to blow something out of proportion. Thank you any help would be good about now.

Unfortunately I can't tell you what range your son should be in. We all vary in that department for what works to keep us from having too many lows. I know in my teenage years because of hormone fluctuations I was told to keep mine higher than now to avoid lows. I also know in babies doctors tend to have them run much higher because they drop so fast. I guess this is my way of saying the target range will change throughout his life and for me that target range is different even throughout the day and night. It's a very fine balancing act to get where you can feel comfortable as sugar levels can change suddenly from minute to minute.

I can tell you this though - there isn't such a thing as perfection when it comes to sugar levels. You can do the exact same thing, eat the same stuff, exercise the same amount and the numbers won't be exactly the same. So I strive to be better, not perfect, as that is definitely not going to happen even with an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor on. ;-)

If he is passing out, you definitely wouldn't be blowing things out of proportion to say hey, something in his care needs to change be it from going low from his diabetes or we need to find out the root cause as that is just something that is tough on a person and dare I say even tougher on the mom!

Keep hanging in there and sorry I couldn't give you more of a definitive number range, but it is really something you guys will be continually fine-tuning. I hope you don't have to wait too long until his next doctor's appointment when you can get some more solid answers.
