Hello, Im having problems experiencing hypos with intense hunger, overeating, and weight gain. I usually watch my diet, eat healthy and exercise. I Feel a loss of control over my body. Im frustrated and getting depressed over the whole situation. Any advice? Thanks.
smith101
Keep sticking with it. It does get better. Hypos pretty much make everyone overly ravenous. It's rotten as I will usually overtreat and then cause a high creating a roller coaster effect. You find tricks that help you specifically. For me, I drink juice and then pop a piece of chewing gum to help keep me from continuing to eat for those ravenous lows. You should find the more stable you keep your levels, the less you will feel hungry. That's no small task though so be sure to give yourself a lot of credit for when you are in range, Even if it's just a fleeting moment, especially in the beginning while you figure out what things cause level changes. Try to give yourself kudos for even the "little" things like remembering to do all your blood tests. Or for managing to get a short walk in and not go low. To "normies" these things are trivial but to us, they can be very difficult things. I find it helps to realize I might not have a functioning pancreas but mercy my brain is taking over quite nicely even if my numbers are all over the place as I'm still sucking air gosh darn it! LOL I can only imagine my sorry pancreas would not have done as well should the roles reverse and I need my pancreas to act as my brain! P.S. As to the weight gain, give yourself a break while you figure out this "numbers game" with the sugar levels. When you get things figured out more than you can start to strip the weight off again. I had to tell myself on that one, "Not yet.", until I got used to things. Yet, does eventually come. Just hang in there. You so got this!

Thank you smithlol for your supportive remarks, i was feeljng low when i searched online last night for a support group for diabetes.. Im so happy that i got a response, a positive and helpful reply. Thank u. As for the hypos, I will try your juice and gum trick and see if that works for me. I know i need to be more mindful of my behaviors. I dont want to panic and then overeat when experiencing hypos. However, i am grateful and give myself for my good health, even though my pancreas is shot. T1d is new for me, it's tough, and a challenging condition. I must learn to master carb counting, and checking my blood sugar regularly. Like you said, "I so got this." Thank u. I need not to worry, but stay calm, and figure this thing out..I do truly belive things will get better.!

My endocrinologist keeps reminding me about the rule of 15 and how I should follow it. It's just when your body is screaming eat moron eat it's tough not to consume more even when you see you are no longer low. The rule of 15 says, eat 15 grams of carbs, wait 15 minutes, then retest and retreat if still low. Well, I went really low once and after following that stupid rule for an hour and even though my glucose reader finally said I was fine, all the other alarms in my head were still saying to keep eating! So I ate half of a 54oz bag of skittles in that one sitting! That's like what a pound and half of skittles! LOL It's no wonder I gained weight until I got better control of my sugar levels as let's face it, I had to be 1.5 lbs. heavier at least from that. :-D Still can't believe I didn't throw up from that. Seriously though, I'm glad you are feeling a little more upbeat. I know I still often get depressed but it helps to know there're others like you out there who can so totally get me. Hey, I hope you find something to laugh at caused by your diabetes this week. I know I will!
LovelyLoreen
Hey Smith101, I haven't heard of the 15 minute rule until now, I'll talk to my endo to get her take on it. Your 15 min rule, and skittles stories are funny...they're the funniest diabetic story of my week. lol. Thanks for sharing.
smith101
Thanks for finding the humor in my skittles story. I know I do now. Hey, don't be a stranger around here. Let us know how things are going and by all means if your feeling down for whatever reason give us a shout out. Hugs from Manysnowdahs (aka Minnesota)!

Hey All, my blood sugar numbers were great today (As an "effort-ful" result of jogging in the park), which is something I haven't done for quite some time. Although, I plan to incorporate jogging into to my healthy routine, and do it more often, I just hope that I can keep it up when the season changes to fall. Right now the weather is gorgeous, and its kind of easy to spend time outdoors enjoying nature, despite my allergies, lol, and simultaneously doing somethjng good for myself. I'm looking forward to the longlasting impact that jogging will have on my weight and overall health. I currently feel good about myself, and about joining this support group, as I plan to be more "in the present." Thanks for the positive feedback!
smith101
Ooooooo that's wonderful! Way to go on both getting out and enjoying that weather, getting exercise in, and having good numbers! I must admit, even though I don't like to exercise I do know it gives me a happy feeling afterward. It's almost like a natural Prozac. I've recently switched from a desk job to one that involves quite a bit more movement and even though it initially caused some nasty lows until I got my insulin figured out, and even though I haven't lost weight from the increase in activity, my mind certainly feels happier. LOL Perhaps I should follow your example LovelyLoreen and maybe even go for a jog! I know my dogs would thank you for that. ;-)
LovelyLoreen
Yeah, I love that happy feeling i get from exercising. Im glad your happier too, smith101, A peaceful mind and healthier body are so important. I love to wake up feeling good in the morning..motivated and energetic. However, lately I've been losing some sleep. :( i just have to find a balance in my new routine. Overall, im good..I was mindful to check my blood sugar before and after working out (I didn't over do it) - And I carried a sugary snack (peppermints) lol, in case i get the lows oit there. Go for it! Take the dogs out for stroll, or a good run. it may "make your day," and they'll feel happier too. :)
smith101
You like peppermints too? I'm the only one in my family that can eat them as a low treatment as they are done after one! Me, I'm like who cares about the pumpkin spice stuff in the fall, I can't wait for the peppermint stuff in the winter! I just love a good hot cup of peppermint coffee! Hey, speaking of coffee. Even though it doesn't have any carbs, some people find that they run higher when drinking coffee. It apparently isn't a caffeine thing as pop and tea don't seem to trigger it. So if you have some unexplained higher numbers on some days and not others this could be the culprit. It's usually not a big change but it's enough to make you go what happened here, why isn't my insulin bringing me down as well? I had no idea about that until my one friend Richard Vaughn found out that was causing his slight uptick in the afternoons and then a whole slew of other diabetics chimed in that they have the same issue. If you like a fairly upbeat diabetic story with a lot of cool history to it he wrote a book called, "Beating The Odds: 64 Years of Diabetes Health" and I think you can get it on Amazon. P.S. I took the walk with my dogs and it was great. ;-)
LovelyLoreen
Yes, I love peppermint! I love the minty taste and the invigorating smell
LovelyLoreen
Strangely, I haven't tried peppermint coffee...I'm more of a french-vanilla coffee person. :) However, u inspired me to pick up and try some pepperment creamer. My BS numbers usually go up 4 points after drinking a non-dairy french vanilla coffee. I usually drink 2 medium cupsof coffee in the morning, Afterwards, the 8 point BS increase is well worth it to me. lol. I might pick up your friends book, his sorry sounds interesting. I'm glad your walk with your dogs was great! It would be nice if u could Keep it up!
smith101
I am so with you on the slight increase in BS for some go go juice as I call my coffee is more than worth it. LOL I firmly believe the people around me believe that too! I did get a few more walks in with my dogs. I have no idea why that isn't a consistent thing for me considering how happy I get when I spend time with them. I also find that walking on the treadmill in my basement is simply not as enjoyable outside except for winter when it's so icy out and the temps give frost burn in minutes. I seriously need to think about how to stay active when peppermint coffee season comes back! Hey, hope you have a wonderful weekend.
