Doug, I personally did not like Lantus. Before I started Lantus I was on NPH twice daily. My blood sugars were tightly controlled on NPH with humalog. When the Dr. wanted me to try Lanus, I was excited, but than when my blood sugars went up, i stopped taking it and switched back to NPH. Now I use the insulin pump. I would recommend the insulin pump for type 1 diabetics.

Lantus is my last hope. I've been diabetic for 12 years and have been prescribed every medication made for diabetes. Iam Insulin Resistant and currently take 80 units of Lantus once a day along with 50 units Humulog 3 x day and Glucophage 500mg. 3 x day. My Endocrinologist just keeps raising the doses & I feel insecure with the "care" he gives me. My blood sugars are way too high & still uncontrolled. Changing Dr's has only been very frustrating as nothing helps to lower them. I've often wondered if I would have better results with a pump. As time goes on with high levels, the symptoms of deterioration are beginning to cause real concern.

We tried our son on Lantus 2 separate times, to no avail. Frequent lows, plus a HUGE disadvantage the advertisers don't tell you is that every time you eat 2 exchanges or more of carbs, you have to have an extra shot of Humalog or Novalog!! I have 2 growing boys with Type 1, and who would want 5 or 6 shots a day? That's crazy!!

I had some minor swings in blood sugar the first time around with Lantus. The second time around the results have been very impressive. I have gone from a 12% HGA1C to a 7.5% almost instantly when switching from the pump to Lantus. The only difference I can see between the first time and second time I took the insulin was that the first time I was taking the full dosage at bed time. The second time it was split into two and taken 12 hours apart. Of course this goes against one of the major draws of Lantus, being that you only have to take it once a day, but there is still a highly overlooked factor. There is a significant reduction in the peaks and valleys that occur when taking NPH or Ultra Lente.
In my opinion there are only two real choices in insulin programs: the insulin pump and Lantus [with Humalog]. The pump is nice, but being attached to it at all times gets very tiresome.

I was on Humulin U, or Ultralente insulin before they took it off the market. I switched to Lantus about 6 months ago, I find that it works very well, and I only need 8 units + humalog to cover carbs. Instead of 12.I don't mind taking a lot of shots if my control is good. but I wish that they still made U40 or U80 strengths so that if my sugar is 200 and I take 1 unit, it doesn't drop too low within an hour. I had a terrible time when I used NPH because I couldn't predict the peaks very well, just goes to show that everyone is different.

I get highs and lows if i don't watch my eating habits....

I too did not have any luck with Lantus, had too many ups, especially at night.

I have been on lantus for a few years now but like all of my privious insulins my body is starting to reject it my readings on the morning are getting more unpredictable. I found when I first was put on lantus it was much better than my old one with I have forgotten the name of.

Oh yeah i red it, She lived in sydney so i knew alot of the places she was staying at:D Though i couldnt really relate, she sounded like a bit of a whimp actually

it was weird to me, how she was always going to the hospital to get "stitched up." but i was able to relate with the inner conflict she was having while finishing school and starting as a working professional.

I read that one. It was very easy to relate to, if a smidge triggering at times...but what book on SI isn't? Everyone copes with this differently, so it made me feel a bit better reading another person's struggle with it.

I have been on Lantus and Humulog for about 6 months. My diabetes has never been better as it is now. Along with a healthy diabetic diet and drinking 2 glasses of water at each meal and have 3sugar free snacks between each meal. My A1C went from 8.0 in December 2011 to 5.8 in August 2011.

What is it you are trying to find out here? It is unusual for TeamDS to post in a group asking about a medication. If you want a proper answer as to effectiveness, why not look at proper experimental data? A poll here is hardly representative and there is no control of variables.

Or are you yourself T1D contemplating Lantus? If so it would be nice if you identified yourself and told us this instead of hiding behind a faceless "TEAMDS" posting ID.

I've been classified as a diabetic type one juvinile diabetic and have had it for 14 years .I was put on lantus a couple of years ago but it has had no real effect on me except holding my blood sugar high.They also have me on humalog at 30 units 3 Xs a dayand its still rising does anyone have any ideas on way to bring it down?
