Diabetes Type 1 Support Group
Childhood","Childhood diabetes is when the pancreas in a child does not produce enough insulin on its own. In order to survive, insulin injections need to be incorporated as well as diet regulation. If your child is diagnosed with diabetes, find support and share your experiences here. Caring for a child with diabetes is challenging. We're here for you."
I think we friended each other a while back, I am 30.
You might also want to check out local diabetes charities, many have forums on their websites and you may find (or set up) a local group through them. Also check the notice boards at your GP and diabetes clinic for local groups, and ask them for tips on meeting other diabetics. There may be groups or courses you have not heard about.
I am also a DAFNE graduate. How are you finding life since the course? Did it help you? Are you getting follow up from your diabetes team?
What part of the UK are you in? I live in London.
I'm in hertfordshire :) How was dafne for you? I imagine it varies by area!
The DAFNE app is very good too, it is really helping me note down my blood sugars and track them over time. I always hated writing them down and didn't see the point.
She also recommended a book, Carbs and Cals. It seemed good as it doesn't just tell you values per weight, it also shows images of what each weight looks like on the plate. I think that will help as I am rubbish at guesstimating :)
She also told me, to make things simpler, I should just count the main starchy carbs. Most people eat the same or similar things each day, so really there are 4 or 5 main values you need to know. She said not to count things like sandwich fillings and even many vegetables.
I am 30 years old and I have been diabetic for 20 years now. I do not know any diabetics outside of the online community, which I am new to. I am starting to get super frustrated with my lows. When they happen in the night and I am too out of it to know what to do. Last night I woke up in mid sleep and part of me knew my blood sugar was low. I got out of bed and then turned around and got back into bed. Woke up at noon all groggy and still low. It frustrates me that life is like this. I spent the day with lower sugars and treating them. It is so annoying and I feel like I want to run away from it all. lol I know that isnt possible.
Not so fun times...
It does seem difficult to meet people some times.
