Diabetes Type 1 Support Group
Childhood","Childhood diabetes is when the pancreas in a child does not produce enough insulin on its own. In order to survive, insulin injections need to be incorporated as well as diet regulation. If your child is diagnosed with diabetes, find support and share your experiences here. Caring for a child with diabetes is challenging. We're here for you."
Can you drink liquids? There are a number of liquid foods and you should be able to adjust your insulin. The main thing is keep your BG levels in range. High sugars decrease healing and I'm sure you know about lows.
I was in the hospital recently for an intestinal obstruction and had nothing by mouth for 4 days running on IV glucose solution. I did fine.
Let us know how you are doing, and be better soon.

Sinead, if you have type 1 diabetes it is necessary to eat, otherwise you will get ketones and might get very seriously ill.
Are you taking your blood sugars regularly? What are they?
High blood sugars can make infection and illness really hard to recover from.
But if you do eat or drink any carbs please be careful and keep taking insulin. Even if you cannot eat or drink you must keep taking insulin as your body will be fighting the infection which can push blood sugars up.
So my advice is:
*Take blood sugar readings hourly, and through the night too - otherwise all the good work you did in the day will be undone
*Phone your diabetes nurse for advice on insulin dosage. if you do not have a direct line, go to your GP and they will phone - sometimes doctors and nurses will answer the phone for other doctors faster than they do for the public
*Keep taking your insulin
*Drink plenty of water, really important to flush out ketones
*Test for ketones, you can get urine test strips for this or one particular meter tests for them too. If you find any phone your nurse or doctor immediately
*If you feel sick or get very thirsty and start urinating a lot phone a doctor immediately
I hope you get well soon.
