My sixteen year old son drinks lots of water. Taking 4 bottles of water with him to school in the morning. I noticed that he has bottles of water in his bedroom too. Says he's thirsty all of the time. I noticed he also has a huge appetite, but I figured it's because he's 16. He just got over a sore throat (I noticed it can be one of the symptoms), he stayed home from school yesterday with a headache. He has no rash or fever but he doesn't necessarily need to exhibit all of them, correct? I set up a doctor's appt. for him for tomorrow. ** One more question: Is it hereditary? No one in our family has or had it, as far as I know.

Diabetes can be hereditary but not always. It is best to have him checked out - all that is needed is a fingerprick test so nothing too traumatic. The usual symptoms are thrist and peeing a lot (linked to each other obviously), and losing weight. This is due to something called ketoacidosis. In the early stages you can't even tell for sure if you are diabetic, my mum took me many times to the doctor since she thought I was but because my pancreas was still working a little, the tests were inconclusive. It was not diagnosed til the ketoacidosis was really bad and I was drifting in and out of consciousness. I don't think a rash is one of the symptoms as far as I know. Vulnerability to infection could be but I have not heard of a sore throat specifically being a symptom.

Diabetes does not have to be hereditary, my daughter got it out of the blue, as Lizzie has said i would get him checked if he is so thirsty all the time, unfortunately i did'nt recognise it in my daughter until it was blantantly obvious something was not right her breath smelt of pear drops, or sweet this is also a sign of ketoacidosis, as far as i know there doesn't have to be a rash, or sore throat, but saying that some doctors link it to a virus of some sort 3 months earlier, not sure how correct this is or if anything has been proven. good luck anyway.

as in my case, they figure diabetes type 1 can be brought on by a virus ....perhaps your sons soar throat or another bug he may have had....
is he irritable?
has he stopped hanging out with friends...kinda a couch potato?
dropped any weight recently?
does he use the bathroom frequently?

these are all other signs of a possible un detected diabetic....

Actually he just got over a bad sore throat and had been feeling under the weather and has been irritable. I can't get an appointment until next week but he "seems" to be feeling better. Yes - he does go to the bathroom frequently but I thought it was because of his huge water intake. Guess we will find out what is going on with him next week. Thanks

hereditary, a tramua to the body, a virus in the pancreas. is what we were told by 5 doc who came to see my daughter. she has 2 out of the 3 listed. she lost 23 lbs in 2 months,slept a lot drank a gallon of OJ in 1 day and was looked like she was dying- because she was. Anyone can get diabetes at anytime. have them check his blood glucose right while your standing there. It should not be over 120-130.

Do you know anyone who has a blood glucose meter? If so they might be able to test his blood sugar to check and see if anything is amiss. Of course you probably would still need to go to the doctor, but if he is Diabetic it might prevent you from the stress of not knowing, and keep him from having ill effects from the high blood sugar.

If you can get hold of a blood glucose meter definitely test him. If that shows anything don't wait till next week to take him to the doctor. If it is diabetes he needs to get seen quickly.

How about keytone strips? u can pick them up at the pharmacy they are not expensive, and will let u know if sugar is present in the urine. If there is take him to the hos. anyone else agree with this? cuz only time i hear about sugar in the urine is with diabetics but i don't want to give bad advice.

I had the same expreience with drinking soda. i didnt display all the symptoms either. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I highly recommend getting him checked out. I hope he doesnt have it because it s a difficult problem to deal with in high school, but keep in mind that it can be worked through. Its not the worst thing that could happen. I now view it as a challenge and oppurtunity to get healthier. Best of luck.

Went to the doctor yesterday. Son still has a sore throat, too. Had blood work done so we will find out either today or tomorrow what the results are. Thanks everybody for your input. I will let you know what we find out.
