Hi! I suffer with depression because of various bad things that have happened to me in the past few years and I don't think my job is helping me.
I work ridiculous shifts and I'm wondering how I can cope with it. I work a day shift then an afternoon shift then a night shift, finishing at 7am and the day after back to days. I have run late a few times for my day straight after a night shift which is stressing me out and I'm really embarrassed going into work as the woman I took over from last time told me her husband was fuming with me.
Where I finish at 7am in the morning they class the rest of that day as my day off. I don't get two days off in a row and I'm required to work extra hours during the week if somebody has booked time off. I know the way my shifts are are not illegal but I can't cope with it any more and it's really making me feel miserable.
I worked over 40 hours last week including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the day after and I got paid 295 for that week, so the money isn't very good either!
Does anybody else work different shifts? How do you cope with it?

So if you happen to work for a compy like that, management will use you for as long as you continue letting them. If I personally knew the said CEO, I would try to work my magic and try to get them to spend the holiday with their family, and quit all this business nonsense. But chances are you don't know the CEO to have a personal conversation with them, so my best advice is for you to look for a different job.
The most important thing in life is love of a family, to let a company take that away from you is wrong. Depending on your talants sweetheart, you can find a job that is just as good if not better, but allows you to spend time with your family around Christmas. Also, its not right to make a person work overtime simply because their too cheap to hire another hand. This was my experience when I worked at Denny's for a year, I ran away fast after that experience.

I did quite well in school and college but then I had a baby so didn't get the chance to go to university. I took a part time course in law a few years ago and got a merit and distinctions in my exams but my partner at the time thought I was spending too much money on the courses I was taking.
I've looked at agency work and jobs in my area on the net today and I'm working on writing on my CV.
This Christmas work hasn't been at all worth it and it's made me feel quite miserable so I'm putting my mind to leaving now and I will make sure I do it! :)
I think you need to discuss the shift rotations with your supervisor or line manager however that person is called. Just run through the shifts and how the bosses think they should be handled.
From what I'm hearing you're being given a day, evening, night, day, shift all together: that is over 24 hrs straight working. I have never heard of such a thing so there must be a glitch in the system.
Can I ask what line of work you're in?
I have said shift too many times in that sentence lol.
I work in a call centre. It's a small business, we take out of hours calls for emergency plumbers and gas engineers, we take calls and then pass them out to different engineers. Four of us work for my boss at the moment. So four people are working 24 hours a day every single day of the year. He doesn't close for any special holidays throughout the year and when one of us has a day off the rest of us have to make up the hours.
I'm afraid I can't really talk to him about changing things as he's run it this way for years.
I'd definitely ask the co-workers how they handle it. work your guts up: work as hard as you can, as smart and as well. A good worker will be looked after by an intelligent manager, and will be able to ask questions about the shift work and maybe have shifts fiddled.
She does the rota then gives it to my boss to check out and he is fine with it. A girl left recently because she hated the hours but my boss was adamant that he explained the way it would be at the interview.
I don't think the others are handling the hours that well at the moment, there were so many mistakes made over Christmas by people. The job isn't that difficult and the mistakes shouldn't be happening as much as they do.
I've applied for a few different things today but there aren't that many jobs in my area, I live in a part of the UK that has one of the highest rates of unemployment. But if I keep working where I do I think I'm going to start becoming really ill. I have a horrible headache today.
