Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
You might want to think about calling the police. Though this might be hard, the alternative of doing nothing might be harder. They can keep him safe for the night until he either sobers up, gets help or both. Being drunk, suicidal and having a gun are a bad combination.
Call them, take the gun from him, don't let him be around the children...
Sorry I hope both he and you are okay...
If not, call the crisis numbers above or the police, he may not like it, but getting drunk, talking like that and having a gun... he needs someone to intevene.
Sorry it took me a while to see this. I hope you are okay
Here is an update about the situation. I am not living in a developping country, where the norms and conventions are different from what they are in the US and Canada where I lived before.
My uncle finally called me, he is my mom's brother, and wanted to take me for a drive. I was worried and told my mom to come with us but she didn't agree. Also I would have wanted to take permission from my uncle if she agreed and I would imagine he would have rejected the idea.
So after my dad scolded me with some of his words (for which I rudely answered him, then now when I came back I apologized to him for being rude) I realized that I had no option but to go with my uncle in the car and just enjoy the ride! He was pretty drunk but I didn't see the gun or ask him about it. I was just keeping quiet and let him talk. His wife called him and he was so drunk that he was telling her that he was the cops and that he was on a scene where there was a suicide.
I didn't say anything. It happened again and he said the same thing. The third time she called he gave me the phone and told me to tell her that I am the cops and that I on the scene. I didn't know what to do but I knew that I had to play along with what he wanted. I did so and pretended to be the cops. I am not sure if she knew my voice the first time but I am pretty sure she did. I think that it was good because at least she knew that I was with him. I was trying to give her hints of who I was but it was tough. The second time she called me I told her a fake name but one that has to do with where I worked before so she can be sure who I was and things were under control. I think she made the connection and recognized me and she didn't call again.
My uncle by that time was sovering up and started to open up to me about his problems. I didn't say anything to provoke him. I was just friendly with him.
He has an issue with his wife that I realized is irreconcilable. I told him that and told him that it is important to work on it. But I told him that in the meantime it would be good to replace the drinking with psychiatric drugs so it is better. He disagreed. Also I asked him to give me the gun but he refused. I also asked him if it was ok for me to call his wife and tell her that I understood that there was an irreconcilable difference between them and we talked about it (it has to do with her work) and that he is ok.
Now he went back home. I told him that I love him and came back home. He still has the gun and maybe he will have a drink.
The attitude in the house is that good he is sober and he will be ok. My mother is even so confidant that I took care of the situation that she didn't ask me yet how things went.
For me I still feel responsible. I wanted to tell his wife also because I didn't want to be the one responsible if anything happen. He made me swear that I won't tell anyone and of course I did because I want him to fell good and someone is on his side.
I am not sure what to do though. The situation with his wife will persist. They love each other very much but still has a gun and he will still drink. In our country calling the cops is not an option. The issue of honor comes up and it becomes a huge issue. We also do not have crisis lines so the closest thing would be a psychiatrist that he is not willing to go to. I hate going behind his back and calling one so he can go and talk to him but I am not sure what he can do. This is an ethical question for me too. If someone is really depressed is it ok to let them die or it is important to force something on them?
Thank you everyone for your support and if you have anything that you want to reflect on, on what I wrote please feel free. Any idea is very useful for me.
Bye

YOU should NOT be alone with this either. It is too overwhelming and painful for one person to be in such a position. Please try to reach out----there are people in AA who are trained to deal with situations like this too;and if you call a Suicide Prevention line, they might be able to help you find such treatment/intervention directly. Please feel free to message me if you want to--I can tell you a little of an experience with a suicidal friend I had, where with help from her mother we staged a successful intervention. But her mother had to be talked into it by a person at a Suicide Hotline, who warned her of the consequences of ignoring her daughter's life threatening situation.---i am hoping this might work out for you too: another,"authoratative" voice getting the gravity of your uncle's condition across to them...It is SO much better--as you obviously know---to be safe than to be sorry!!!!Your parents need to recognize this, too, as does his wife.
Please pm me if you would like, and please please update us on all this.Take care of yourself,too--i really mean that so much.Someone to support you,as well,at your time of need.Being alone at such a time is too much for a person to have to bear---and what's more, just ONE more person on your side could help get your uncle the help he needs...Sending best wishes and thoughts to you...please try to let us know how you and everyone are doing.Hugs to you.
If you cannot obtain police protection or protection from your Mother and Father, you have to do what you have to do, .. but this is a very, very, very bad situation.
Thanks again for all your support. It is morning on my side of the world. You are right this has been quite hectic for me. It is good that I am going to see my psychiatrist in an hour. I hope that I won't spend all the time talking about my uncle but at least there will be someone to talk to.
I am not sure what kind of services we have here for alcoholic addiction but I will definitely ask my psychiatrist about such a service.
My uncle called me this morning to ask me again not to tell anyone about yesterday. Everyone knows that I was with him but he doesn't know that they know. They know because at his moment of rage I somehow hinted to his wife that I was with him so she knows and he didn't know.
On a positive note, my mom is going to call him today. I explained to my mom yesterday how it felt to be with my uncle in the car. About 3 months ago another uncle of mine had a brain stroke and I accompanied him in the ambulence. I explained to my mom that it was almost the same feeling that I had when I was with my uncle in the car as when I was with my other uncle in the ambulence. I wanted to explain to her how difficult the situation is and it is important to see mental illness as seriously as a physical illness such as a stroke.
She is going to call my uncle and tell him to see a psychiatrist. Also when my uncle called this morning he told me that his wife told him that she wanted to leave him and that worried me. I was worried that he would have a bad reaction to the news and feel depressed again. They actually talked about their differences and had a good one hour discussion before the kids woke up. He then hinted to me that he was going to seek help from a psychiatrist. So that is good news. I hope that he follows up on that.
As for now, thank you all so much for making me feel safe. It has been a difficult situation and it still is but your responses have made me feel supported.
BTW the gun is still with him but we couldn't do anything about it. Maybe I will ask his wife to throw them away. The problem is that he has a license and he might buy a new one.
Bye everyone and good morning to you when you wake up.
