Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Hi. I'm hoping that this thread can be a positive thought starter for some of us that suffer through depression. I want to specifically offer thoughts and advice to those in the community who post things like, "my job sucks, nobody cares, nobody loves me, life is terrible, why do I bother..." Please take this for what its worth. You CAN make your situation better.
There is a book and DVD called "The Secret". Find it, pick it up, and read or watch it. I'm not saying it will change your life, but it will give you some perspective that will help.
Basically, "The Secret" is the Law of Attraction. In this world, we attract what we think about. Its not that we WANT to be disliked, or ignored, or abused at work, but if we get up in the morning thinking "woe is me, nobody cares, its going to be a terrible day" then that will be our reality.
The Buddha once wrote that "we are nothing more than everything we think". Basically, if we put negativity out there, we will attract it. If we put positive thoughts, energy, hopes, dreams, etc., into the unitiverse, we will attract that too.
There is no more guaranteed method of perpetuating your pain and displeasure than by concentrating on it and holding it close to you. Its been working for you that way for a long time, hasn't it? Why continue a pattern that brings you pain and suffering?
I can't summarize an entire book in a few words, but I am willing to answer questions about it, or carry the discussion forward.
First step is to make a list of the things you're grateful for - it could be the shape of your toes, or the nice dinner you had last night. Count 'em up. Even those of us who are in a deep, dark place have some things to be thankful for. The next step is to make a list of the things you want in your life. It goes from there. Get the book. Get the DVD. Of course, its easier just to stay in the hole you're in and say, "woe is me" but getting out of it is more enjoyable, believe me.
Look, there are no magic beans or easy answers to depression, but this can and does help. All the people I know who have followed this precept swear by it. Not some. Not most. All. Needless to say, I do too and its made a HUGE difference in my life in just a short time. Any questions? More to follow? That's up to you. Good luck.

Wonderful about reading it now! Can you see how the "oh woe is me" syndrome might be creating its own reality, as a self fulfilling prophesy?

I will have to read it sometime. I am now reading A New Earth, a book along the same lines. A friend has also suggested Dr. D's book, and now will have to look for Secret.
I will look into the book, but I hope it is not a dud. The church i used to attend had a program where we read "The Purpose Driven Life". IT was much touted. It was, IMHO, bogus drivel. But that is just me.
Is "The Secret" available in paper back?

Now, it takes some practice. Let's give us folks with major depression disorder a little slack. We are a stubborn, set in our ways, group of individuals. We have a tendency to fall backwards. But, then there is nowhere to go but forwards !!
The CD is great. You can play it and do whatever around your place. You are still absorbing all the positive words that are surrounding you.
Actually, I was thinking just a little " Secret " when I read your profile.
