I'm 19 years old and am going to be starting my sophomore year of college in the fall. I go to school full time and am unemployed (not by choice at all). I live at home with my mother, who just hit 40 and is starting to go through either a mid-life crisis or menopause. Either way, it sucks.
On a daily basis, I get yelled at for anything she can find that pisses her off. I get called retarded, lazy, worthless, a waste of life. I am threatened to get kicked out almost every day.
I want to move but can't, because I don't have a place to put my stuff and I know she'd just throw it away. I can't afford to actually find somewhere of my own to live because I have zero money coming in and I don't know when I'll find a job.
I leave a lot and go with friends and come back when she's sleeping, or just stay out all night and come back the next day. But I can't keep relying on other people, I hate doing it. I don't know how to react to her when she yells and gets mad, and I'm afraid. She used to hit me when I was younger, and tried it again a few months ago, only I hit back last time and she hasn't tried it since.
She knows she can do this to me because I rely on her completely but she needs to stop and I don't know what to do.

On the other hand, .. if you have no place else to go .. ya gotta be someplace.
I don't have a solution. If I did, you would have probably already thought about it.
All I can think if is avoid her (as you have mentioned). I REALLY hope you can find something more suitable soon.
About domestic violence .. it is very common for two people who have hit each other to BOTH go to jail .. no matter WHO STARTED IT. I would sure advise you to not hit her .. under any circumstances except 'serious' self defense. Avoid that to the best of your ability. Here is a VERY good reason for you to get the hell out of there. You (and her) would both be CHARGED AS ADULTS. I just wish there was somewhere SUITABLE you can go.
Wish I had a specific solution. I don't. I hope one presents itself soon.
