Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
You need to take the black cherry flavor. It's a sublingual med.
Also, take 10mg instead of 5mg because 10 will really put you to sleep compared to the 5mg.
I swing back and forth between complete sleep deprivation---which, yes, creates a kind of numbness----and sleeping far too long, which starts the cycle all over again.
Shift workers do tend to suffer sleep dep more often than people on a regular 'daytime/nighttime' schedule.
I think it is still a huge unknown area, even for researchers and scientists.
I do know all three factors are linked somehow (insomnia, depression, schedules kept.)

"Treatment for depression.
Recent studies show sleep restriction has some potential in the treatment of depression. As many as 60% of patients, when sleep-deprived, show immediate recovery, although most relapse the following night. The effect has been shown to be linked to increases in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). It has been shown that chronotype is related to the effect of sleep deprivation on mood in normal people.
Those with morningness preference become more depressed following sleep deprivation while those with eveningness preference show an improvement in mood.
The incidence of relapse can Many tricyclic antidepressants suppress REM sleep, providing additional evidence for a link between mood and sleep. Similarly, tranylcypromine has been shown to completely suppress REM sleep at adequate doses."

People end up in very bad shape, mentally, if it continues. Companies shouldn't be allowed to have rotating shifts that people can't adjust to - what a bad idea. It has to cost them in production. Makes as much sense as doctors and surgeons working 24 hour shifts. Probably accounts for those x-rays with scissors sewn inside a person.
Blocking the light, being comfortable (a little cool), and telling yourself that you will only rest - if sleep comes, fine, might help. Of course, all the caffeine needed to get through a day when you're sleepy/exhausted plays a role -- it's a vicious cycle.
Giving up something necessary to function normally, isn't a good solution to any problem.
