Effexor is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) but no idea what that means I tend to leave the doctoring to the doctors.
Serotonin is a naturally produced hormone. It acts as a messenger in the brain. It 'messages' mostly pleasure.
Seratonin messenger packets travel between 'synapses' in the brain. Synapses are 'spaces' between neurons. Neurons are not 'connected' to each other .. there is a small space between each two .. and there are billions of them. The 'messenger' is what completes the circuits ... but instead of traveling from one side of the synapse to the other (completing the circuit) it leaves one side but goes BACK to the same side (reuptake). SSRIs SELECTIVELY prevent (inhibit) reuptake. The hypothesis is that people with clinical depression suffer too much reuptake.
SNRIs do the same thing but involve other hormones like norepinephrine (noradrenalin) AND serotonin. Reuptake inhibitors are involved in most of the SEVERAL neurologic hormones ... dopamine, adrenalin, noradrenalin, serotonin, and more.

You can kind of think of neurons as capacitors and neurotransmitters as electrons/electricity. If you were to connect a light bulb to a battery, wires and a capacitor, the capacitor limits the amount of electricity flowing through the wire. If you were to use a large capacitor with a high voltage you could see electricity arc between the two plates. The antidepressants (SSRI/SNRI/DNRI's) block the reuptake of some neurotransmitters increasing the transmission between synapses. In capacitors they would effectively increase its capacitance (increase the voltage between the electrodes) as well as speed of transmission, thereby making the light bulb glow brighter and strobe faster.
