Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I know it's difficult, but give them time to process it and accept it. Oftentimes when people come out, they have held onto their truth inside for a long time before they take the step in telling loved ones. I don't know how long you have been questioning/exploring your gender, but however long it is, that's how long you have had to get used to the idea. Your parents have only had as long as the time when you told them until now.
I am not naive enough to say everyone comes around, but I can say I've seen a lot of people come around in my lifetime, so don't give up hope. Allow them time to process it and bring it up again at later time, like once you have been able to reconcile your depression and feel more confident.
Just, please, don't give up on what is in your heart, and don't bury your truth. Even if your parents can't accept you, there are people who will.
I'm sorry you're hurting. I hope you feel better soon.
Don't react like that. Of course we don't understand. I don't think most people sit around contemplating gender or reading up on the subject.
Your family will likely be confused and have a lot of questions. I think you should be patient and encourage them to be open about it and ask questions. Remember it doesn't mean they don't love you if they have questions. They just want to make sure you are ok and how they can help.
My niece ran away and moved to another state. She has nothing to do with us. My mom and I send her a nice birthday and Christmas card every year. I even picked one out that said "we love who you were, who you are, and who you are going to be." And wrote please call us sometime. How much more supportive can that get?
Yet she still ran away to another state, changed her name, says she is a man, and has nothing to do with us. She isolated herself because she refused to answer questions. That just furthers the ignorance of all of us who don't understand, so how can we hope to be more supportive? I hope your parents come around. Just tell them what you need from them and be patient.
