One of my dear, elderly, very wise friends once said that there was nothing shameful about being poor, just mighty inconvenient. I've never forgotten his words.
It's very frustrating and the condition is depressing.
I grew up as a child poor. The daughter of a tenant farmer. The conditions and environment was horrid. I got older, swore to myself that I would some day overcome this way of living and I did. Got an education, (several), and held some very good careers. And then, like a vast majority of folk, the 2008 economic "crash" pulled the rug out from under me. I haven't held a job since. Just recently I began doing accounting/bookkeeping for a client that I worked for freelancing before the 2008 collapse. The work doesn't yield much, but I am very, very grateful for it. When I was growing up, my mother took the measly crumbs that came our way and stretched them as far as she could by shopping consignment stores and clearance isles to clothe us kids. She also shopped $ Stores for essentials to run the household. Our food was grown on the farm via a garden. Meat came in the form of home grown beef or pork, when we did have it. Looking back on these days, I have slowly realized over the years that, although at the time, it was very humiliating and embarrassing to go to school in used clothing and have most of our stuff come from the $ Stores, but it served a great purpose for me. I know that I can survive on the slimmest of amenities. (We didn't even have running water; or an indoor bathroom. Many times we had no telephone, the only T.V. we had came via an antenna which had lousey reception, and the electric was always in danger, and did succumb, do being disconnected.) At least I have running water, satellite, and electricity thanks to good money management and Hubby being able to find a job. A roof over my head and food, albeit the basics. I am grateful for this.
I, too need my glasses prescription renewed. I am using reading glasses I obtained at the nearby Dollar Tree for a buck. (Great place to shop, BTW, if anyone has access to one)
About 2 weeks ago, I went to my monthly chiropractor appointment (if I pay cash the rate is very cheap, and I pay cash since the insurance deductible is $7500. I keep the insurance with a high deductible so I can afford it. I have health issues and fear not having insurance will put me in dire straights. What a joke. Insurance, but can't afford to use it. At least I am fortunate to be able to have insurance that I pay for now with the proceeds from the bookkeeping. Many cannot afford it; and are not eligible for assistance. I don't know if Obamacare is going to really help this situation, because so many are struggling just to provide the basic essentials, let alone pay for health insurance. Time will tell I guess.
Anyway, got off from the train of thought here. I splurged at the consignment shop and picked up a few name brand jeans and shoes for less than $1.50 each. I only had $10 on me for this "shopping spree" but I did very well.
Point is, sometimes despite the horrible circumstances that befall us, we can look beyond our current situation and discover there are many who are worse than we are. We are still allowed to bewail our circumstances, though. This is only human nature. Life is not fair. Circumstances/situations are not fair. It sucks.
I am very glad that your landlord is the type of person who is thoughtful. It is rare that a landlord would give his tenant anything anymore. It's encouraging to me that you have one that does. I know there are many kind, generous individuals among us.
I understand from New York on up the east coast there are many who were living in forests because they had no where to go after loosing their homes in the foreclosure systems. This has been going on long before Hurricane Sandy made her impact. Many are not aware of this, because our news media doesn't find it "news worthy". But, my news station featured it in a documentary. My heart goes out to these folks. Now, these folks are living in horrid conditions. Makeshift "huts" with no sinks, running water, cook stoves. Some do have the luxury of pop-up campers. The people meet in the middle of the "camps" to prepare food and eat. Some do have electricity, but I don't know how it is generated. These are sad.
So, there is always someone worse off than we are. And, that is what I choose to look at when the despair of being "financially strained" bears down on me.
I hope that your furbaby feels better. I have some older cats, and because of health conditions that accompany seniorhood, they are struggling to. I am glad that you have a means of being nurtured and have some companionship, i.e. the kitties. You are very thoughtful to put your eldest cat before your own needs.
I hope your situation improves very, very soon.
Best Wishes.

I'm glad my cat did me the favor of eating the expensive food i got him today.:) I've put out too much of his cheaper leftovers for strays, though at least the prior stuff didn't go to waste.
My cat is 19 years old, and again, I should be happy he's been around that long.
After I read your post about your senior kitty being 19, I went to the garage and discovered my senior kitty of nearly 19 years old was near passing. I talked with her and stayed with her until she died. It is sad. But I am glad that she was able to go naturally. I had so dreaded that I might have to have her euthenized. She has been in bad health for a long time. Her weight had fallen to nearly 4 pounds. Mere skin and bones. She had a good life though. I feel satisfied that I gave her that.

sorry to hear about your cat. I'm selfish enough, and told my vet just a month ago, that I hope my cat just goes in his sleep.
The mom cat of this one lost a lot of weight---turned out to be cancer.
My 19 yr old furball lost weight, though the vet said he has borderline thyroid condition. When a cat eats like crazy and loses weight, its his thryoid. So, maybe eventualy one hour ordeals every day to try to shove a thyroid pill down his throat.
When I ran away from home when I was 17, I drove my $300 car through Texas, and slept at the salvation army in Amerillo for a night. Somewhere in Texas I came upon cows on a road, so I turned back, cause I was afraid I was on private property---but I came upon the highway sign, so I turned around again, right back to the cows on the road. I don't remember what I did next, but I still remember cows across some paved road in Texas.
A peaceful & prosperous new year to you too, WanderingVet.
wow, 19, she is lucky to have a loving owner as a senior cat. i'm a cat lover too, so i hear you.
nice to meet you.
...from a penntuckian about 30 miles from phillipsburg (at this point i don't care if i'm semi-anonymous)
about 99 percent of my stuff is from walmart, with me looking weird biking some really big stuff home on the handlebars/frame of my bike.
happy new year to you too.
new me, with "my" (?) toxic parents group---with photo of ex-family homestead, for anybody wanting to see past poverty, or maybe an example of money wasted elsewhere.
Poverty sure does suck. I lost my wallet about 3 weeks ago, all my credit cards were stolen. I had almost 200 dollars in cash in there, plus my debit card, and EBT (foodstamps) card. It sucked. I am so behind on bills, and stuff. Its going to take me longer to catch back up than I thought it would. Because this happened, I was not able to give my friends and family the Christmas that I wanted to. :/ but it made me realize that things could be a LOT worse...I know that money probably helped someone out, I just wish the person would have at least brought my license back, because that is going to be the hardest part to get back =/
(Hugs) hang in there.
