Gordos, I'm sorry you're still struggling with thoughts of suicide. I understand your fear of going back to a psych ward, I've been there too and it is a scary place to be. I hope your medication begins to work better and the side effects decrease. Hugs!

it might e helpful to find an endocrinologist if ur MD isnt one already i have hypothyroidism and it makes my depression much worse when its not treated try talking to you MD about take a T4 hormon if your not already it did wanders for me. hope it helps hugs

Was it a complete or partial thyroidectomy?

If complete:

You'll need to take a pill every day that contains the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine (Levothroid, Levoxyl, others).

This hormone replacement is identical to the hormone normally made by your thyroid gland and performs all of the same functions. Your doctor will determine the amount of thyroid hormone replacement you need based on blood tests.

If partial:

If only part of your thyroid is removed, the remaining portion typically takes over the function of the entire thyroid gland, and you don't need thyroid hormone therapy

Therefor, one could conclude your thyroidectomy is not the cause of your depression unless lab tests indicate you need a thyroid medication adjustment.

Thank you for the replies. I had a tumor on my left lobe, so only had a partial thyroidectomy. I am already on medication, 210mg of Armour (pig thyroid). I have heard of supplemental medication. I hope the internist is able to help me.

I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT LOW THYROID CAUSES LOSS OF ENERGY AND DEPRESSION.
I M GOING 2 HAVE BLOOD WORK ON MY THYROID NEXT TIME.

gordo..I think it is the steroids that are making you feel this way. They are well known for suicidal tendencies. The fact that you like your Dr is not a good enough reason to stay with him if you do not feel he is doing what could help you the most.

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion...it doesn't need to be a permanent Dr...you can just go and see what you think of another opinion.

Also, you have a lot on your plate that is contributing...maybe a lot more than 3 years ago? I suggest touching base with another Dr. and taking a look at the steroids....I don't know if there is another type of treatment you can do besides steroids :(

Missy, there is no other way to treat PMR. It is very painful, so it's either take the steroids, or let the pain drag me down, it's kind of a toss-up. I think my mom had thyroid disease too. Now that I know how sick she was, physically & mentally, I feel so bad for her. I used to resent her for abusing & neglecting us kids, but not anymore.

gordo...I understand about your mother.
My mother always complaining of pain from Fibromyalgia...ME thinking it was some fake illness she conjured up for attention.

Now I have it! And it is no joke! It is painful all the time and makes depression 10x worse.

My Mom is still alive and I could make amends I suppose.

That stinks about only being able to use steroids...maybe there are different kinds? Make sure you tell your Dr how you are feeling.

Misssy, PMR is almost identical to fibromyalgia as far as pain goes. My psychiatrist told me I need to see a Rheumatologist. I have arthritis throughout my body. I wish my mother were still alive. She lived in Phoenix for a number of years, we never saw her. She sent me a letter one time & all it did was make me mad. At that time, I didn't quite appreciate what she had gone through. When she died, she laid there for 3 days before anyone found her. She had been in ALOT of pain, and was alone. I know that was her choice, but it still makes me feel bad.
eshaw-thank you, yes, the psych ward was very scary & isolating. Never again.
