Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Important Note To Reader: If you do not have time and patience to read this whole entire post, then just read what is in bold in the Note To Reader below. It is a summary of my theory. But if you just read this summary and nothing more, then you might be very likely to stop abruptly, say that my theory is nonsense, and come up with counterarguments against me without reading my whole entire post here which addresses all possible counterarguments I have thought of. Therefore, that is the reason why I would really encourage you to read this whole entire post in addition to this bolded summary below.
One last thing here. My theory makes logical and rational points and arguments to support my theory. It is not some crazy irrational theory that someone mentally disordered would come up with such as if someone came up with the theory that the world is going to end tommorrow or that there is going to be a hail of fire upon the Earth.
It is also not some type of irrational theory that any normal depressed person would come up with. In other words, my way of thinking here is not a distorted way of thinking. It is not the type of distorted thinking you see in depressed people at all. My theory will all make perfect sense to you and everything will add up to there really being a scientific version of good and bad.
Note To Reader: I highly suspect that the moral (personal value judgment) version of good and bad is a deluded lie like religion passed down unto humanity and does not make us or our lives good or bad. There is a scientific version of good and bad that humanity and science is unaware of since I don't think science has any current way to prove or disprove the moral version of good and bad and if there really is a scientific version of good and bad or not.
Now not only is the whole entire book I have written on my theory very likely to be way too long for people to even bother reading it, but my whole explained simplified theory (post) here is way too long as well. Therefore, I am just going to have to state a few paragraphs here of my theory right now. However, I would really encourage that you read my whole theory here since it makes nothing but convincing argument upon convincing argument for my position:
Our family, goals and dreams, and this life/universe in of itself does not give our lives any good meaning. It is our brains that do the job. It is our brains that give our lives good meaning from those things and people since they are what perceive meaning in our lives.
There is the difference between a thought and a perception. We have thoughts of hearing and sight. But then we have actual hearing and sight. We have thoughts of pain, suffering, fear, rage, and misery. But then we have actual pain, suffering, fear, rage, and misery which would be our unpleasant feelings/emotions. We have thoughts of smell and taste. But then we have actual smell and taste.
But we also have thoughts of good and bad meaning in our lives and we have the actual perception of good and bad meaning in our lives. Our pleasant feelings/emotions (our reward system) is what allows us to actually perceive good meaning in our lives. It is a scientific version of good meaning and not a moral version of good meaning or any other version of good meaning.
Our unpleasant feelings/emotions are what allow us to perceive the scientific version of bad meaning in our lives. So good and bad I think are senses like hearing, sight, and smell. They are scientific terms just as how sight, hearing, and smell are also scientific terms. If we are experiencing our pleasant feelings/emotions, then we are having a sense of good meaning in our lives. If we are experiencing unpleasant feelings/emotions, then we are having a sense of bad meaning in our lives.
If a person were blind and deaf, then a moral version of sight and hearing and a version of sight and hearing that is defined in the dictionary that is not scientific would not give him/her sight and hearing just as how the moral version of good and bad and any other version of good and bad in the dictionary would not give our lives any good meaning without our pleasant emotions.
A thought of us having good meaning in our lives from our family, goals and dreams, etc. while we struggle with depression and/or anhedonia cannot give our lives any good meaning. It would be no different than if a blind and deaf person told his/herself that he/she still has sight and hearing from his/her family and from his/her goals and dreams. That would not give him/her sight or hearing.
All good thoughts always send the pleasure signal to our brains to give us the experience of pleasant emotions. They send the pleasure signal to our brains and give us the actual sense of good meaning in our lives which would be our pleasant emotions.
As I will explain in my theory below later on, something can only be of good value and worth to you if you have the incentive to live for it. Our reward system (pleasant emotions) are the only incentives an animal (in this case, a human being) has based upon what Robert Sapolsky has said who is a famous and highly intelligent evolutionary biologist at Standford University. You can search him up and watch his videos on www.youtube.com.
Furthermore, since all thoughts of us having an incentive in life to live for our family and goals and dreams always send the pleasure signal, then all thoughts of you having an incentive in life are all good thoughts.
They are thoughts of us having an incentive and good meaning in our lives. But they would not give our lives any incentive or good meaning just yet. Only once they send the pleasure signal and give us the experience of pleasant emotions would we then have the incentive and good meaning in our lives.
It would be no different than how the information in the other brain functions do not give us sight and hearing just yet. Only once they send the signals to the functions of our brains that give us sight and hearing would we then experience sight and hearing. But it is a constant 24/7 process unlike our experience of pleasant/unpleasant feelings/emotions.
Only once a stimulus is perceived as promoting survival would that then send the pleasure signal and allow us to perceive that stimulus as being good through our pleasant emotions (wanting and liking). If we perceive a stimulus as hindering or threatening our survival, then that would send the displeasure signal and give us the experience of unpleasant feelings/emotions in order to perceive that stimulus as bad.
The only time a good thought does not send the pleasure signal would be if you struggle with anhedonia and/or depression or if the brain is just taking breaks from getting pleasure signals. But since those thoughts would send the pleasure signal otherwise, then they are still good thoughts (thoughts of us having an incentive in life). Same thing also applies for bad thoughts.
So there you have it. That is a brief explanation of my theory. You come across this explanation here again which almost basically says the same things. I just had to include it in that brief summary. It was quite obvious to me since the very beginning that our pleasant emotions (good moods) are the only things that can give good meaning to our lives. I didn't even have to question it. It was so clearly obvious to me all along.
My personal experience of having this depression and anhedonia has then made it absolutely 100% convincing that our pleasant emotions are the only things that can give good meaning to our lives. When I struggled with severe depression in the past, then I was able to give a clear and distinct comparison between the severely depressed mindstate I was in before as opposed to the mindstate I have achieved of having my pleasant emotions later on. Of course, I have no pleasant emotions now since I have anhedonia.
But when I was in a depressive mindstate, everything seemed completely "dead," hopeless, and meaningless. It was as if all good meaning has been sapped out of me regardless of what things I told myself such as that my life is still fully good since I still have a family and goals/dreams to pursue. Some people might say to me:
"The reason why your life seemed meaningless was only because of the fact that you had the thought that things seemed meaningless to you regardless of what things you thought to yourself. If you had a completely different mode of thought and truly thought to yourself that your life was still fully good and worth living, then your life would seem full of meaning for you even while struggling with that severe depression."
This quoted message couldn't be any further from the truth. The hopeless and "dead" state of mind is, in fact, the mindstate of perceiving no good meaning in your life. It has nothing to do with your thinking. It you said to yourself the statement:
"My life is nothing but hopeless," then that would be no different than saying:
"My life has nothing but bad value and bad worth. It has no good meaning whatsoever."
Since depression is nothing but a feeling of hopelessness, then to have depression would be no different than saying that you feel that your life is nothing but bad and that it has no good meaning. So depression is a sense of bad meaning in our lives.
But as I've already pointed out earlier, thoughts of good meaning cannot give our lives good meaning since your sense of good meaning is turned off which would be your pleasant emotions and your sense of bad meaning is turned on which would be your feeling of depression.
To have good meaning in your life would mean to have joy, love, and an incentive to live. When you are severely depressed, you obviously cannot experience joy. Since our thoughts alone cannot give us joy, then it is only our pleasant emotions that give us joy. You cannot have joy while depressed since it is an optimistic experience. It is a pleasant emotion.
Love, care, compassion, etc. are also optimistic experiences as well. Therefore, you cannot have these either as long as you struggle with depression and/or anhedonia. You can only experience them through your pleasant emotions.
So even with all of this being said, it is not so obvious to some people who struggle with depression and/or anhedonia. They think that their lives can still be good and worth living through their thoughts alone. Although a blind and deaf person would obviously be aware that he/she cannot see and hear, it is not so obvious with depressed and anhedonic people.
Now going back to my statement with my depressive mindstate being compared to the mindstate of me experiencing my pleasant emotions. When I got over that depression and had my pleasant emotions again, everything seemed "alive," vibrant, full of meaning, awesome, and transcending. It clearly has nothing to do with my thinking because even people who struggle with depression that is the result of a chemical imbalance or mental defect and not a result of any negative (pessimistic) thinking report having this same experience when they get over their depression as well.
Therefore, it is quite clear to me now. There is a scientific version of good that gives good meaning to our lives which would be when our reward system is turned on and we can experience our pleasant emotions again. This is the good that humanity and science is currently unaware of. This is the good of the future that would take perhaps hundreds or even thousands of years for scientists to discover when they develop the advanced technology to discover it. But I have single-handedly discovered it and have revealed it to you upon this very day.
So you can see why I need my pleasant emotions back to me. For someone to say to me to just live with it would be no different than someone telling me to just live with a pillow suffocating me. I would want to take that pillow away so I can breathe again. In that same sense, I would want to get rid of this anhedonia and depression so that I can breathe the good meaning, profoundness, and beauty of this life and universe once again.
Now as a side note here, good is a synonym for worth. Bad is also a synonym for worth because there is good worth and bad worth. If someone or something is worth something to you, then this means that you have the incentive to live for them. That they are of good value to you.
Now I explain later on that wanting and liking can only be our pleasant emotions. However, there is also a pessimistic version of wanting which would come from our unpleasant feelings/emotions such as wanting to get rid of something in your life or wanting to escape from danger. But our wanting and liking (incentives) cannot come through our thoughts alone. If there is somehow a version of wanting and liking through our thoughts alone, then they are not the incentive version. They would give our lives no incentive without our pleasant emotions.
As for the life we are currently living in now which consists of much suffering, depression, mortality, and anhedonia, that life is utterly inferior. I have nothing against nature, innocent living things, innocent people, or this universe since they are not inferior. I am an atheist. However, I just utterly detest it when an atheist says something to me such as:
"When we die, we all die and that is it. Life is suffering and we must all accept it. We must also accept the fact when we die, there is no rewarding eternal blissful afterlife for all our suffering either. We are but atoms and dust prone to suffering and will fade away in the end."
It would be no different than if we were living in the time period right now where Hitler was harming all the Jews or when blacks and whites were discriminating/harming each other. It would be no different than if someone said to me:
"You are but a Jew and you are but a white animal subjected to the harm and discrimination of blacks. You are also a slave to Hitler and this is just the way it is. We must all accept this way of life. When we suffer and die by the hands of Hitler or by the hands of blacks, then we must also accept this very fact as well."
In the time period where we are now, this quoted message would be quite offensive. It would be offensive now and it would also be offensive back then. If I had the choice, I would eliminate those blacks in my life and I would eliminate Hitler not only for myself, but for the sake of everyone else as well.
So in that same sense, I would also want to eliminate all suffering, depression, anhedonia, and mortality and create a better world. An eternal blissful life through science in the future. If I had the choice to do that, then I would obviously do that right here and now. The fact is, nothing and no one stands in my path.
Nothing and no one will bring my good mood down. I have a composing dream to live for and to compose compositions for the world and anime and videogames. This grand moment absolutely calls for an eternal blissful life in which I could be in a good mood for all eternity with no suffering, depression, anhedonia, and mortality ever happening to me.
As long as I am not in a good mood due to this depression and anhedonia, then this moment couldn't get any worse. If I were to, in a pretend situation, compose the greatest and most awesome compositions for the world of anime and videogames right now, then I would not even be allowed to have any good meaning whatsoever from any of that without my pleasant emotions. Even if I did it for others all around the world, even that would not be able to give my life any good meaning either.
Now I am going to continue on here. You might think that I am just droning on and on with nonsensical blabber since everything I say is so long, but that couldn't be any more wrong.
I give very convincing arguments and support for my theory. Everything I say all adds up to there being a scientific version of good and bad that humanity and science is unaware of and that the moral version of good and bad is fake and does not make us and our lives good or bad. Therefore, if you can't read my book, then I would at least really encourage you to read my whole explained simplified version of my theory here.
I am on a mission here to destroy the moral version of good and bad since it has made a mockery and an insult of my struggles of depression and anhedonia (absence of pleasure) long enough. It is deluded ignorant nonsense to say to a severely crippled depressed person that his/her life is still good and worth living and that his/her family and goals/dreams can still bring him/her good value, meaning, and worth in his/her life.
So my book and my whole entire explained theory here does just that. It does an excellent job at destroying the moral (personal value judgment) version of good and bad from all possible angles. I have autism and am highly intelligent. Therefore, I am using every bit of my intelligence to try and destroy the moral version of good and bad.
I intend to destroy it and instead create something better. An eternal blissful life of no more suffering, depression, mortality, and no more anhedonia created by science in the future and have me and others who have missed out resurrected so we can live this new eternal blissful life.
The moral version of good and bad sort of reflects the life we are living today which is nothing but a life of suffering and misery we must all accept and live with. It says:
"Your life can still be good and worth living. So stop complaining and just deal with your problems, suffering, misery, and crippling depression."
As long as this moral lie still lives on, then hardly any progress will be made to create an eternal blissful life and eliminate all suffering. But if my theory were to be proven true and that there really is a scientific version of good and bad, then that would really encourage scientists like never before to find cures knowing that our pleasant emotions (good moods) are the only things that can make us good people and our lives good.
Now what I just said there might sound like nonsense to you. But I have given many upon many supporting and convincing arguments for my position here.
I have written a whole entire book on this theory I have come up with. My personal experience of depression and anhedonia (absence of all my pleasant emotions) has led me to this theory. But since I don't think anyone would even bother taking a look and reading my book since it is so long, then this is the reason why I have instead included a detailed explanation of my theory here.
I have also included an audio sample of my book near the end of this post. My voice is altered to the voice of someone like some psychotic villan to give a cool vibe to my explained theory in order to catch the listener's attention.
I have made this detailed explanation as brief as I possibly could while, at the same time, explaining everything that needs to be explained and addressing all possible counterarguments others might come up with against me on my theory.
That way, we can continue a debate and discussion that makes new debating points that continue on from this explained theory rather than just starting off from scratch and slowly building our way up.
I have already thought everything through and have come to my own final conclusion that there really is a scientific version of good and bad and that the moral version of good and bad is fake and does not make us or our lives good or bad. The moral version of good and bad is like a deluded lie like religion passed down unto humanity.
In other words, we wouldn't need to waste any time slowly building our way up to a final conclusion. You can instead just read my whole entire explained theory here and then have a discussion and debate that continues on from that.
But like I said before, maybe I am actually wrong here. I say in my writing here that what we thought was nonsense in the past was proven true later on. So maybe perhaps what I think is nonsense right now is actually true or will be proven true. Therefore, if I really am wrong, then prove to me how a depressed and/or anhedonic person's life can still have good value and worth. If there is no proof, then people are just believing in the moral version of good and bad like a religion.
My explained theory here says some of the same things I've said in my book. So I have included the most important (vital) things from my book and have restated them here instead. But even so, my book still has new things being said in it. So perhaps you really would want to take a look at it and read it. I think you will find it to be quite interesting.
I have come up with a theory that could change how we all think as human beings. It would really encourage and help scientists to find a cure and better treatments for depression, anhedonia, suffering, and mortality knowing that our reward system (pleasant emotions) are all that we have to live for to make our lives good and worth living.
My theory might be false though. I am on the quest for truth here and wish to know if my theory is true or false. I wish to know if it is a proven fact that a depressed and/or anhedonic person's life can still have good value and worth. As I said before, there is a scientific version of good and bad that humanity and science is unaware of. This is the true good and bad and this is what makes us and our lives good and bad.
Since there is currently no way for science to test out and prove/disprove whether there really is a scientific version of good and bad and if the moral version of good and bad is real or fake, then I am left not knowing if my life and the lives of others really can have good value and worth if we struggle with anhedonia and/or depression.
Unless it really has been proven that there is no scientific version of good and bad and that the moral version of good and bad really does make us and our lives good or bad. But I am really thinking that there is a scientific version of good and bad and that the moral version of good and bad is fake and does not make us or our lives good or bad.
If there is no way to prove or disprove my theory, then that would cause me rage. This is because in the event that my theory is true, then no one would be able to understand my loss. People would still insist on telling me things such as:
"There is more to life than our pleasant emotions. Your life can still be good and worth living. So stop being a selfish crybaby and just suck it up and move on."
But if my theory was proven true to the whole entire world, then people would now understand my loss. They would now say something to me such as:
"I see now. I was wrong this whole entire time. Our pleasant emotions really are the only things we have to live for in our lives. I truly apologize and I now truly understand the depths of your loss."
But in the event that my theory is false, then I would never know that my life could still have good value and worth and that things/people in my life including my own family can still have good value and worth to me and can still bring good meaning to my life despite my anhedonia and depression.
But since my pleasant emotions are so vital and life dependent for me, I don't think I would ever be able to find that sense of good value and worth in my life without them.
Now some people might say something to me after reading my theory such as:
"This is by far the most nonsense I have ever read!"
But would that be your own personal opinion? Or do you have actual proof that my theory is wrong? You have to prove my theory wrong. You cannot just use your own personal life experiences and such since our own personal opinions and personal life experiences have never proved anything.
It is science that proves and disproves things. Besides, plenty of things were thought to be complete nonsense in the past. But as it turned out, science later on proved those things to be true. For example, many people thought that the idea of evolution was complete nonsense at the time. But science later on proved that.
It would be no different than if a religious person came up to me and said:
"Your atheism is nonsense! Of course there is a God and afterlife! My personal religious background and life experiences has taught me so!"
You would have to have actual proof of the existence of God and the afterlife. Otherwise, you would have done nothing more than wasted my time.
Therefore, if you are going to say that my theory is nonsense, then do it the right way. Get the job done right. Show me actual disproof of my theory. Otherwise, you would have done nothing more than wasted my time.
I am on the quest for truth here. So I am seeking the truth here. I am seeking the answer to my theory. I am not just seeking the personal advice and opinions of others.
I may not have actual proof of my theory. So am I just wasting your time then? No! I am presenting to you something new here to give you an open mind. I am giving you something to make you think twice about the moral version of good and bad.
Even though you are free to give me some feedback to make me keep an open mind as well, the fact of the matter is that neither is my theory proven or disproven and neither is your opinions proven or disproven either. So we cannot say that my theory is true or false yet just as we cannot say that the opinions of others are true or false just yet either.
But anyway, continuing on here. I am now going to begin to explain my theory:
Our sense of reward is the only incentive an animal (in this case, a human being) has which would be its pleasant emotions which are the result of the functioning of its reward system. This is an idea I came up with.
However, it also happens to be true since Robert Sapolsky has also said the same thing. Robert Sapolsky is a highly intelligent and famous evolutionary biologist at Standford University. You can search him up and watch his videos on www.youtube.com.
Now even if other things/people in this life can still somehow be defined as having good value and worth to us, that is not enough.
We need the incentive to live for those things/people in order to make our lives good and worth living. We need the incentive in order to actually perceive good value and worth towards other people and things in our lives. There is the difference between having a thought and having a perception.
If a blind and deaf person were to tell his/herself that he/she still has sight and hearing in his/her life, then he/she would not be able to have hearing or sight through his/her thoughts alone. It is nothing more than just the thought of hearing and sight.
But his/her actual hearing and sight is the actual perception of hearing and sight. So in that same sense, we cannot have good value and worth in our lives as long as we struggle with depression and/or anhedonia which turns off our pleasure (reward system) function throughout our whole brains. We would just be telling ourselves nothing more than thoughts (words and phrases) of us having good value and worth in our lives.
But nothing and no one would be able to give our lives any good meaning including our own family since we are not actually perceiving any good meaning from them in our lives. So thoughts alone of your family being special and great to you will not give your life any good meaning. Therefore, they would actually mean nothing to you.
Regardless of how profound and loving our thoughts are, that would not allow us to experience any love or have any good value and worth towards our goals and dreams, people, things, and even our own family as long as you struggle with depression and/or anhedonia.
Even if you changed the whole entire world and helped innocent people all around the world and made their lives good and worth living including the lives of your family, even that would mean nothing to you without your pleasant emotions.
We need to actually perceive good value and worth in our lives. We need to have an incentive for living. Otherwise, we would have no reason for living, helping others, and pursuing our goals and dreams. Some might say something to me such as:
"We don't need any incentive to live for our family and goals and dreams in order to make them of good value and worth to us. It would be no different than some greedy person asking for the incentive of money in order to make living for his/her family and goals/dreams something of good value and worth to him/her."
But let me reveal something to you. That very quoted message would be your incentive for living. The idea that your family and goals/dreams are of good value and worth to you is clearly your incentive for living for them. You are clearly perceiving it to be a rewarding experience to live for them and to live and pursue your goals and dreams. If you had no incentive, then they would be of no good value and worth to you.
I am now going to present to you an example here. It is a person who has no incentive whatsoever in life. He/she is like a droned zombie with no pleasant emotions. He/she says this very quoted message:
"Even though I have no incentive whatsoever in my life, my family and goals/dreams are still of good value and worth to me which is why I am still living for them."
Do not let this quoted message fool you. This quoted message would easily fool a person's brain into thinking that this person is still living the good life. In other words, it would fool a person's brain into thinking that this person actually has the incentive to live on. Even though you do not hear any thought spoken in your mind that he/she has the incentive to live on, you are actually being fooled into perceiving that he/she has the incentive to live on even though you do not realize it.
The fact is, our brains can be fooled into perceiving things even though we are not aware of it. I think they would be subconscious thoughts we can't hear. Besides, we can actually find out here if this person was fooling his/her own brain into thinking he/she had the incentive to live on.
If we take those things and people away that he/she deemed to be of good value and worth to him/her, then if he/she were to lament and/or become frustrated/enraged over that loss, then this means he/she was fooling his/her brain into thinking that he/she was having the incentive to live for those things and people.
Same thing applies if you were to take them away, bring them back to him/her, and then slowly pull them away from him/her again. If he/she begs for them back, goes after them, or reaches out for them, then that is the very definition of having the incentive for those things and people.
If you were to struggle with depression and/or anhedonia and you were to say something such as:
"I don't need to live any sort of good life at all. My life does not have to be good or worth living at all. I still have reason to live on for things, my goals/dreams, and my family."
Then that is the very definition of living a good life right there. By saying and thinking to yourself that you have reason to live, this is fooling your brain into thinking you have the incentive to live. And, thus, you are fooling your brain into thinking you are living a good life even though you do not realize that.
I'm not sure though, but some people might say something to me such as:
"You can still live a good life without any incentive whatsoever."
But if that were the case, then this would have to mean that if we were not fooling our brains into thinking we had the incentive if we struggled with depression and/or anhedonia, then it would not bother us at all if good things and people in our lives were to be taken away from us. It would mean that you would not care. You are just living just "to live" and nothing more.
Even the idea of you living would not matter to you either and even that would not bother you either if you were to have your life taken away from you. It would also have to mean that it would not bother us if some criminal decided to make this world an awful place to live in and took away all the good things and people from citizens.
Therefore, I just don't see how that can possibly be defined as being good. I honestly don't see how someone or something can be of good value and worth to you in life if you have no incentive to live for them. You would be living for no reason at all. Therefore, depressed and anhedonic people have no reason to live even though they do not realize it. They are just fooling their brains into thinking that things, their goals and dreams, people, and their own family still brings good meaning to their lives.
But I'm not fooled. I can see the truth for what it is. Now I do feel depressed and such about my loss of pleasant emotions. So this would actually be my brain fooling me here as well. There is a process that occurs in the brain which lasts for a fraction of a second which has the end result of me feeling depressed about my loss of pleasant emotions. This process would be my mind's way of saying:
"I have the incentive to have my pleasant emotions in my life. But since I can't have them, then this is a problem."
My brain first comes up with the message that I am having the incentive to have my pleasant emotions in my life. Since it realizes that I don't have my pleasant emotions, it then perceives a problem and sends a depressive signal to my brain in order to give me the experience of depression to alert me of this problem to urge me to solve that problem.
But if my brain never got the message that I was having the incentive in the first place, then I wouldn't be depressed. So if my brain just got the message instead that I just don't care at all, then my brain wouldn't even perceive a problem and I wouldn't even become depressed.
So this whole process of me feeling depressed would actually be an irrational process. But these things are inevitable. I can't help but feel depressed about my loss of pleasant emotions since they are the only things that make my life good and worth living.
When we have the incentive (want and like) to live for our family and goals and dreams, then if we were to have those things taken away from us, then unless you have found something or someone else good in your life to replace that loss, then you would lament and become frustrated over that loss for the time being. So in order for something to be of good value and worth to us in the first place, then we would have to want and like to pursue them and live for them.
But if you had no incentive which would mean that you would not lament or become frustrated over the loss of things and people in your life, then I honestly don't see how those things and people had any good value and worth to you to begin with. As I will explain, our reward system is the only function of our brains that can give us a rewarding experience. It is the only function of our brains that can give us the incentive to live.
So as long as that is turned off due to depression and/or anhedonia, then if you were to still live for, pursue your goals and dreams, and lament and become frustrated over losses, then what you would be doing here is fooling (deluding) your brain into thinking you are having the incentive here and that your life is still good and worth living when it never was.
Now our pleasant emotions are that only incentive and are the scientific version of good. Our thoughts alone in of themselves cannot give us any incentive since they are all nothing more than just the "thinking" experience of our brains. They can only experience different thoughts, send pleasure/displeasure signals, and send signals to make us move and express certain acts, tones, and expressions. But that is it.
They can only experience the words and phrases (thoughts) of love, joy, happiness, pleasure, motivation, incentive, inspiration, suffering, despair, sadness, rage, etc. But they cannot experience those things. Those terms I just mentioned are scientific and have been defined through science as only being our pleasant/unpleasant feelings/emotions and not our thoughts just as how those same terms have not been defined as being our hearing, sight, or any other brain function.
For example, love is an incentive. It is the urge (want and like) to bond with someone. It is a rewarding experience. So it is a pleasant emotion. Therefore, you cannot have love in your life as long as your reward system is turned off due to depression and/or anhedonia.
Our incentive that exists in the realm of the survival aspect which would be us finding good meaning in our lives in pursuing our goals and dreams and helping/supporting others, that incentive is always a rewarding experience for us as human beings. It gives good meaning to our lives. But the incentive that exists in the realm of the problem solving aspect which would be us running away from danger and solving life crisises, that is always a disrewarding experience for us as human beings. It gives bad meaning to our lives.
Since the term "rewarding experience" has been defined through science as only being our reward system (pleasant emotions) since our reward system is the only function of our brains that can give us a rewarding experience, then this would mean that our reward system is the only function of our brains that can give us the incentive to live, pursue our goals and dreams, and help others. It is the only function of our brains that can give good meaning to our lives.
To say that something is of good value and worth to you even though it was not a rewarding experience for you would be no different than saying that it was a rewarding experience to you even though it was not a rewarding experience for you.
So that would be a false (contradictory) statement. Same thing applies for saying that something can be of bad value and bad worth to you even though it was a rewarding experience for you. So if you took drugs and got a rewarding high off of them and you thought to yourself that these drugs are of bad value and bad worth to you since they would damage you in the long run, then they would actually not be of any bad value to you in that given moment.
This is because you are having nothing more than just the thought of them being bad to you. But you are not actually perceiving them as being bad. You are not having any unpleasant feelings or emotions from them to give your life any bad meaning from those drugs. Therefore, you are only perceiving those drugs as being harmful and dangerous to you. But you are not actually perceiving them as being bad to you.
Our thoughts alone do not give good or bad meaning to our lives as I said before. They only perceive stimuli. They only perceive stimuli as promoting survival or hindering/threatening survival. A stimulus that is perceived as promoting survival would send a pleasure signal to your reward system and give you the experience of pleasant emotions of wanting and liking in order for you to actually perceive good meaning towards that stimulus.
And, of course, perceiving a stimulus as hindering or threatening survival would send a displeasure signal and give you the experience of unpleasant feelings/emotions which is what would give you the perception of bad meaning towards that stimulus.
So as for now, these drugs are nothing but of good value and worth to you. But later on when those drugs cause damage to you and bring you suffering and despair which would be your unpleasant feelings/emotions, then that is the moment where those drugs would now be of bad value and bad worth to you.
So the thinking area of our brains alone does not give good or bad meaning to our lives. It only makes logical decisions and choices. Therefore, you could make the logical decision right now to quit those drugs even though you would have no incentive for quiting since you are not experiencing any pleasant or unpleasant feelings/emotions from the idea of quitting.
So you would just be forcing yourself to quit. In that same sense, depressed and anhedonic people can make the logical choice and decision to live their lives, pursue their goals and dreams, and help others. But it is a forceful way to live. It is not a way of life that brings any good meaning whatsoever.
It's almost as if the thinking area of our brains has a decoy version of reward and disreward to fool us into thinking that certain things, people, and situations are of good or bad value/worth to us without our pleasant/unpleasant feelings/emotions. But it would just be a decoy version of incentive to avoid or pursue things in our lives. It would not bring us or our lives any actual good or bad value/worth.
It is only our moods that give good or bad meaning to our lives. If you are in a good mood, then your life is good regardless of what you tell yourself otherwise. If you are in a bad mood, then your life is bad regardless of what you tell yourself otherwise here as well.
If you are in a neutral (apathetic) mood due to anhedonia, then your life has neutral (neither good or bad) value and worth regardless of what you tell yourself otherwise. Our moods are the only things that make us good or bad people and are the only things that can make our lives good or bad. "You" refers to your conscious (your mental experiences) since that is what makes you "you" to begin with. Therefore, to have an experience of pleasant or unpleasant feelings/emotions would make you a good or bad person.
You would just be a good or bad person in the feeling/emotional sense if you experienced pleasant/unpleasant feelings/emotions. But not in the moral sense. If someone is morally bad, then we would have scorn and detest towards him/her. If someone is morally good, then we would compliment and admire him/her.
But just because a depressed person who helps others is bad and just because a sociopath who derives pleasant emotions from harming others is a good person, this does not mean that we should have scorn and detest towards the depressed person and compliment/admire the sociopath.
The feeling/emotional (scientific) version of good and bad simply says that you would be a good person in the sense that you feel good. That your life is good and worth living. If you feel bad, then you would be a bad person just simply because you feel bad. That your life has bad value and bad worth.
Now our unpleasant feelings/emotions are the scientific version of bad and give us the perception of bad meaning in our lives. So you cannot have any good meaning in your life as long as you are in a "dead," hopeless, and bland mental state due to your depression and/or anhedonia. Your life would either have bad meaning (depression) or neutral (neither good or bad) meaning (anhedonia).
You need to be in the "alive," vigorous, transcended, sacred, divine, and vibrant mindstate of experiencing your pleasant emotions (good moods) in order to perceive good meaning in your life. It is a scientific perception of good meaning and not a moral or any other version of good meaning.
If the moral version of good or any other version of good meaning was all that was needed to live a good life, then this means we could go up to a severely crippled depressed person and say in a joyful/excited tone:
"Forget the fact that you were hardly able to function and that you were on the brink of suicide. Your life was so wonderful since you told yourself that you were still living the good life and since you have still chosen to help others and pursue your goals and dreams anyway while being in nothing but a severely crippled hopeless and "dead" mindstate."
According to the moral version of good, this quoted message would be true. But according to my theory, this would be complete nonsense. The fact is, there is a scientific (psychological) basis for how things, people, and our lives are of good value and worth to us that people are ignorantly leaving out. That psychological basis is not our thinking. It is our pleasant emotions (good moods).
That quoted message would be no different than telling a blind person:
"Forget the fact that you completely stumbled everywhere and were hardly able to navigate. You still have so much sight since you told yourself you have it and since you still performed acts, tones, and expressions of you having sight."
If the moral version of good was all that was needed to live a good life, then people would not even bother trying to find a cure and better treatments for depression, anhedonia, suffering, and other mental disorders.
If the moral version of good was all that was needed to live a good life, then lives would not be destroyed by depression. People wouldn't check themselves into the hospital, wouldn't become suicidal, and would still fully function just like any normal human being.
If there was no scientific version of bad and that our personal value judgments of bad is the only thing that can make us and our lives bad, then we could just change our thinking and live fully good and fully functional lives while struggling with the most severe depression.
If there was nothing bad about the depression in of itself and that it was all just a matter of our own pessimistic thinking and nothing more, then depression would be no big deal at all. It would be no different than if you had a shiny cup in front of you and someone replaced it with an ugly one. A really ugly one that you really disliked.
If you somehow had to live with that cup and couldn't get rid of it, then even though you might have a lot of pessimistic thoughts towards it, it would be no big deal. Even though you would have something very ugly in your life that you would have to live with, you wouldn't be suicidal and you would still find every reason to live on, pursue your goals and dreams, and live for your family. You would live a fully functional life.
If there is nothing bad about that cup and it is all just a matter of your way of thinking, then it should be no big deal and it would just be a matter of changing your thinking and nothing more. I could say this as well about a severely crippled depressed person. If someone was struggling with the most crippling depression and was on the brink of suicide, then we could just say to him/her:
"What's the big deal? That depression might be one ugly beast, but there's nothing bad about it. It's no big deal. Just work on changing your thinking and you can live a fully good life and fully function while having it in your life! No need for any treatments or anything like that. You are just having a bad selfish attitude and a bad selfish outlook on life here."
So you can see why that quote is such nonsense. This is why I highly suspect that the depression in of itself really is bad and gives bad meaning to our lives and that it has nothing to do with our thinking. Our depression would be the scientific version of bad.
I will bring up Robin Williams. He was a very caring and compassionate person who lived for others and helped many people out in life. He was a very strong-willed individual who had the will and determination to live for others even in despite hardships and struggles. So why in the world would someone like Robin Williams surcome to suicide and end his life over what is apparently nothing more than an "ugly cup" or an "ugly beast" that is nothing bad?
I will let you ponder that question for a moment...
It would be no different than if someone was going through agonizing physical pain equivalent to getting your arms and legs sawed off to the point of being driven on the verge of suicide and a person came up to him/her and said:
"What's the big deal? That physical pain might be one ugly cup. But that's all it is. It's nothing more than like having a very very ugly cup in your room. It's nothing bad. You just have to change your thinking."
When a person goes through much pain, misery, and trauma in which they experience unpleasant feelings/emotions such as depression, physical pain, post traumatic stress disorder, etc., then this turns off the survival aspect characteristics of the brain. The survival aspect characteristics would be us perceiving good meaning towards pursuing our goals and dreams and towards the helping of others.
So it turns off the perception of good meaning and instead turns on the problem solving aspect characteristics of the brain which would be us perceiving bad meaning towards problems, life crisises, the hindering or threatening of survival, etc. No change of thinking can change this since the unpleasant feelings/emotions themselves are what give us the perception of bad meaning in our lives.
When we are experiencing unpleasant feelings/emotions, then the brain needs to turn off the perception of good meaning in our lives. This is because it is a survival thing. It is how the brain is hardwired. For example, if you still perceived good meaning in your life and you performed acts, tones, and expressions of pursuing your goals and dreams and helping others while being chased by a lion or while being in any other situation that hinders or threatens your survival, then something could go wrong or you could be killed.
Therefore, in that same sense, people who struggle with depression and pursue their goals and dreams in life and help others anyway, then they are still having nothing more than bad meaning in their lives. It would, therefore, be an ignorant deluded lie to say that a depressed genius artist who has created his/her works of art was inspired by his/her depression and that his/her depression brought good meaning to his/her life and to his/her works of art for him/her.
Even if you struggled with depression and/or anhedonia and your brain accepted and adapted to it, you still wouldn't be perceiving any good meaning in your life. This is because it would be no different than how a blind or deaf person is still blind or deaf even if they accept and adapt to their blindness or deafness. A blind or deaf person's other brain functions would be enhanced.
For example, the functions of a blind person's brain responsible for his/her hearing and navigation would be enhanced. So in that same sense, the functions of a depressed and/or anhedonic person's brain responsible for his/her intelligence and creativity might very well be enhanced. But he/she still cannot perceive any good meaning in his/her life just as how a blind or deaf person still cannot perceive sight or hearing in his/her life.
One last thing here before I continue on. If something is of good value and worth to us in our lives, then this means we pursue it and live for it. For example, if your family is of good value and worth to you, then this would mean you would live for them. It is the pursuit of a goal. You are pursuing the goal of living as much as you can for your family.
Now if you were to somehow turn off a person's ability to think and you were to stimulate their reward system to make them feel intense pleasant emotions, then they would display joyful and excited acts, tones, and expressions. So they would display optimistic acts, tones, and expressions.
These are the acts, tones, and expressions of pursuing and living for things in life. They are the acts, tones, and expressions of wanting and liking. They are the acts, tones, and expressions of us having good meaning in our lives.
For example, if you were to display joyful and excited acts, tones, and expressions regarding a new movie or game you are going to get, then those would be the acts, tones, and expressions of perceiving good meaning towards that. You would be wanting that and liking that. They would be the acts, tones, and expressions of living for it and pursuing it.
So clearly the person who had their reward system stimulated perceived good meaning in his/her life and it had nothing to do with his/her thinking. Even though those optimistic joyful/excited acts, tones, and expressions were not geared towards the pursuing and living for anyone or anything, they were generalized acts, tones, and expressions. This person was perceiving a generalized good value and worth in his/her life even though it was not directed towards anyone or anything.
Now if I were to turn this person's ability to think on and I were to turn his/her pleasant emotions off, then he/she would still choose to pursue and live for things in his/her life. So he/she would still be able to express optimistic acts, tones, and expressions (the acts, tones, and expressions of living for and pursuing things in his/her life).
But if he/she were to express bland tones and expressions, but still performed acts of living for and pursuing things in his/her life, then those would be optimistic acts. So doesn't this say that we can have good meaning through our thoughts alone without our pleasant emotions?
The answer here would be "no." First off, it would be no different than if a blind and deaf person told his/herself that he/she still has hearing and sight and expressed acts, tones, and expressions of him/her hearing and seeing. Second, I am now going to use my example of that person for this new point I am now going to make.
If I turned off his/her ability to think and inflicted upon him/her immense physical pain, then he/she would display acts, tones, and expressions of him/her being in pain. But if I turned his/her thinking back on and turned off his/her ability to experience pain, then if I were to inflict something upon him/her that would of otherwise gave him/her immense physical pain, then if he/she thought and said:
"Ow, that seriously hurt! I am in so much pain!," then this would be a false and delusional statement. If he/she then performed acts, tones, and expressions of him/her being in pain, then those would be false and delusional acts, tones, and expressions. So in that same sense, people who think and say without their pleasant emotions due to depression and/or anhedonia:
"I am still living the good life. I still have good value and worth in my life," then that would be a false and delusional statement. If they then performed acts, tones, and expressions of them having good meaning in their lives, then those would be false and delusional acts, tones, and expressions.
Pain is a sensation felt in the brain when physical harm is inflicted upon you. So without that sensation, then you cannot have and you cannot experience pain through your thoughts alone. So that is the reason why thoughts of you having pain anyway and acts, tones, and expressions of you having pain would be false and delusional thoughts, acts, tones, and expressions.
Our pleasant emotions are a sensation of good meaning in our lives. They are a sensation of good value and worth in our lives. So without your pleasant emotions, then you cannot have and you cannot experience any good meaning in your life through your thoughts alone.
So that is the reason why thoughts of you having good value and worth in your life anyway and acts, tones, and expressions of you having good value and worth in your life would be false and delusional thoughts, acts, tones, and expressions.
Our wanting and liking can only be our pleasant emotions and not our thoughts alone based upon what Robert Sapolsky has said. I forgot the title of the video. But I think it was titled somewhere along the lines of: "Dopamine and Reward. Wanting and Liking." My internet was down at the moment. So I cannot give you the link to the video now.
But to conclude this whole explained theory of mine here before I move on, the only life worth living to me is an eternal blissful life of no more suffering, depression, mortality, and anhedonia. That is the one and only life worth living to me and is my one and only incentive for living for my family and pursuing my highly gifted composing talents.
I find no meaning whatsoever in pain, misery, hardships, depression, anhedonia, etc. Not even if they made me grow as a person, become more empathetic and understanding of the suffering of others, and made me a better composer. This is because the only thing that can give meaning to those maturing factors would be my pleasant emotions.
So the only thing that can give my life meaning would be if I was like someone who parties and has a good time for all eternity who has no problems, suffering, depression, anhedonia, or mortality ever happening to him. I would be having such a great time composing through my good moods alone whether they be happy, joyful, dark, or gothic compositions.
I wish to be intangible and unstoppable. I wish to always be up and running and have nothing bring my mood down. I have a great composing talent to live for and pursue. I will not stand having my inspiration and good value (good moods) being brought down. It is an utterly inferior and worthless way to live and is an utterly inferior and worthless way to compose.
Even if I composed the most epic masterpieces this world has ever known right now, then that would not bring my life any meaning whatsoever. Only if I am in a good mood again in which I have my pleasant emotions again would I then have immense good value and worth from this very moment in my life.
So my depression and anhedonia are nothing more to me than some louse on the back of my neck sapping away the very good value and worth of my life and composing dream. That louse does not suit me, does not suit my style and personality at all, and just needs to be disposed of. Some people would want suffering, depression, and anhedonia in their lives in order to grow as a person and become more empathetic towards others.
But not me. I would just choose to dispose of that louse right here and now if I had the choice so that I can be up and running again with a high mood and compose awesome pieces one after another through my heightened good mood. As long as I am not experiencing any pleasant emotions from growing as a person, living, composing, and becoming more empathetic towards others, then it means nothing to me.
If it's not something I wanted and if it is a way of life I did not want to live, then it is worthless and meaningless to me and I would just give up on it. If it is something that does not suit my desires and does not suit my personality, then I would just dispose of it and give up on it.
If someone's one and only way of life was to become a talented singer, but he/she then somehow permanently lost his/her singing voice, then as long as he/she is living a life that he/she does not want and does not like to live, then it has no meaning and is a worthless life.
To say that something or someone can be of good value and worth to you even though you do not want them and do not like them would be no different than saying that you want them and like them even though you do not want them and do not like them. So this would be a false (contradictory) statement.
If someone did something that he/she did not want and did not like to do such as going to work to support his/her family, then there would actually be something of good value and worth to this person. His/her family is of good value and worth to him/her. Therefore, he/she would be wanting and liking to live for and support his/her family.
But since our wanting and liking can only be our pleasant emotions and not our thoughts, then you would have no reason for living for anyone or anything at all if you struggle with anhedonia and/or depression. Depression (hopelessness), I'm quite sure, is the worst of all unpleasant feelings/emotions since it lowers you down far more than other unpleasant feelings/emotions. So if you struggle with depression, then your life has the worst bad value and bad worth and nothing can give your life any good meaning as long as you struggle with depression.
You would only be fooling (deluding) your brain into thinking you want and like to do things in your life if you were to still choose to live on, pursue your goals and dreams, and help/support others in life anyway. But I'm not fooled here. I know the truth. That truth being that I really have no reason to live as long as I struggle with depression and/or anhedonia.
Nothing and nobody would have any good value or worth to you as long as you struggle with depression and/or anhedonia. Also, if that talented singer lived a life and pursued a different career that he/she did not experience pleasant emotions from, then his/her life and new career would be worthless and meaningless as well here.
But maybe through science someday we can create an eternal blissful life in the future and resurrect people such as me who have missed out and have me and them live this new eternal blissful life. I could then compose for all eternity the one and only way I wanted to.
I am going to make some final conclusive points before I move on. Non scientific factors cannot yield scientific results. For example, if someone personally judged an object or possession as keeping him/her alive, then if he/she were to lose it, then that would not cause his/her heart to stop beating and **** him/her. If it somehow did, then it would be because there was some other scientific process going on here that killed him/her. Not because he/she personally judged that object as keeping him/her alive.
So in that same sense, it is not our personally defined version of incentive through our thoughts alone without our pleasant emotions that make our lives good, worth living, and make us lament/enraged over losses. There is instead a different scientific (mental) process going on here. It would be your brain fooling itself into thinking that you are having the incentive. Also, if there is somehow a version of wanting and liking through our thoughts alone without our pleasant emotions, then that would not be the incentive version. They would not give us any incentive as I said before.
The very act of our brains fooling themselves does not make our lives good and worth living either without our pleasant emotions. If you had no pleasant emotions and you said the phrase:
"I am fooling myself into thinking I have the incentive to live. Therefore, my life is good and worth living."
Then this would be a false statement. It would be no different than the statement:
"I am fooling myself into thinking the Earth is flat. Therefore, I am going to fall off the Earth."
So now that I have explained my whole entire theory here, I am now going to present to you a brief audio sample from my book. I have altered my voice to get the listener's attention. Therefore, here is the link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs45hLw5Ow0
Here is the book. It explains my full theory. Usually when people want you to read their books, they ask for money. But this is not that type of book at all. It is not a published book. This is just simply something I put a lot of time and thought into.
Go ahead and start reading my whole book. But if you don't have the time and patience, then just continue on reading the vital introduction section of my book where I last left off in that audio sample. Then, from there, skip on down and read the last two sections of my book. But if you wish to read my whole entire book, then I would really encourage that. Even though there are many repeated things, there are also some new things as well.
Write down the page number you last left off reading. It is displayed somewhere on the webpage. I wish for you to have a debate and discussion with me after you have read my whole entire book. That is, if you wish to read it all. If you can't and don't have the time and patience, then that is fine.
Therefore, here is the link (url) to my book:

Seems you have put a lot of effort into something ... but I have a feeling this is not the place to promote it. Good idea .. perhaps, but bad venue.
I read about half of your post. I agree with WV, this is not likely a good place to discuss your theories.
I wish you well.
I am not sure I should start......Ok, ok I will read it but, now but if I analyze it you might just get mad cuz I will answer it....just say'n....
I just hate it when that happens! GERRRrrrrrrrrr
Look I understand your introspection, your wanting to balance the beams by reasoning in the abstract. We all do it in some form....what I would like to say is,"Welcome to life!" You made it.
You are feeding your soul by juxtaposing, can you not see it? Don't worry as it is no never mind we all do it. We balance the known as opposed tho the unknown, seen to the not seen, the what is to the what could be....is it not great this life?
Look detective take notice as you will not find this in a book, nay it is a reason of the mind.
What does science dictate ? Why all the learned peeps will say "you cannot create something from nothing." This would seem a true fact if it not were for this reality. You can create something from nothing because before this moment I never knew you existed, that memory is a creation two fold.
See a little bump in the..u know I will let you digest that on your own.
You take care....
I started reading the post and then recognized much of what you have written many times on the subject and I'm sorry to say I stopped reading. ( No disrespect at all ). I have to agree with Pepperman and W.V.
I too wish you the very best.
