But...if I understood right...your grandmother's cell phone, the one who has passed, is still turned on, right?
I've called people and gotten "voicemail" which was called a "message box" by the recorded voice. I think it's just a term used by different carriers.
Also, I used to work for the phone company, and some places (usually businesses, not individuals) will request a "message box" which is just an electronic inbox. There's no voicemail attached, nothing, just a receptacle for messages. It's usually done to avoid answering the phone during busy times, and is usually an option: "Press 1 to leave a message for Suzy. Press 2 for..."
I hope that made sense...no real answers though. I do know that phone lines (land and cell) can do some seriously weird shit, and nobody can figure out why.
