Hi I'm a junior in high school and I joined a marathon club at school back in August and I've been training there 3 days a week. Until today was the day of my first marathon.. I missed the bus that was suppose to take me there. All this training for nothing. I feel terrible about myself and I don't know what to do.. I've been crying to myself and feel lost and scared of what will happen next.

Please, your hard work was for something....setting those little goals is so rewarding. You found something to work towards. Finishing a marathon...not always in first, second, fifth place...is very rewarding.

Aren't there going to be more marathons you can run in?
ScaredKat
It wasn't for nothing. I bet you're a lot more fit then you were in August. Keeping yourself physically well is a big part of taking care of yourself because sometimes it can be really hard to take care of your mental health. In addition, there will be more marathons for you to work towards and I'm sure you'll be even better by then. I know it really sucks to miss something you were looking forward to, but you can't do anything about missing it so maybe you could try to do something else you like to do to get your mind off of it?

I'm so sorry. Sometimes these things just happen for no reason. But your hard work is worth a lot. Do you know how many 5ks, half marathons, and full marathons there are all over the country? Google for ones closest to you. I'm sure you'll find one. Not a lot of people can run a marathon. That makes you unique and gives you a special ability that you earned. Don't throw the towel in. Find a marathon for a cause or for whatever it's for.

P.S. my coach would pay for us to be in these races and now I feel so horrible for wasting his money for nothing. I feel anxious and worried of what he would say to me if I see him the next time and my friends who were there wouldn't talk to me I feel worthless.
ScaredKat
Honey, its okay. These things happen all the time. Your friends are still your friends, unless they're assholes, and I'm sure if you talk to the coach you can work things out with him too. I think the best thing to do is probably just try to do something you like to do before your anxiety levels get really really high. You can't deal with it right now in any way so I'd just avoid it as much as you can until these people are in front of you and you have to talk about it. Otherwise youre going to stress yourself out for hours

It was a mistake, a temporary setback. As they said, it wasn't for nothing. Getting in tip-top shape is never for nothing! I realize you wanted to win or at least come in second or third at the marathon and enjoy those accolades of accomplishment. When's the next marathon?
Catbug
@koolman 3 weeks from now...
