Hello everyone. I heard about this site from a crisis number and wanted to at least check it out. I't 4:55 am and I live in the eastern standard time zone. I lost my job back in September and started a new one in October. I knew it was only a 3 month contract but it ended early due to the company not having enough work for me. My fiance and I knew I would be losing the job and I have e-mailed a few other places that were interested in me but it hurts so much right now. I can't sleep, I don't want to do anything. I feel like I keep trying to get a steady job but it just isn't working. I feel like I have several pillars in my life- relationship, finance, car, apartment, money and at any given time, one of those pillars is at risk of falling apart. I wish things were easier. I just don't know how much more of this I can take. Thanks for listening.

If you have to take a temp job to pay the bills, do what you have to do. But if you can get by on unemployment for a while, focus your search on permanent jobs only. Use all the sites you can: Indeed, Monster, Linkedin, etc. Go to networking events. Check out meetup.com for professionals looking for work. Also go to the start up meet ups as they may be hiring too.
It sucks now but you will find something. And if you do end up temping again for a bit, go in with the mindset that you will do the best job you can and know you will be leaving. Leave with good references and don't be afraid to ask for letters of recommendation and/or recommendations on Linkedin.
I guess what I would do, just to get it out of the way, is I would contact the prior employers, and ask them if there was anything you could improve on, to help your employment chances going forward. Be humble.
What employers do where I come from, because employment law makes it so hard to fire people, is we hire people on fixed term contracts kind of to see how they will do. If we don't like them, we let their contract run dry. So you need to eliminate from your enquries the possibility that you're just plain doing it wrong.
The other thing is to take whatever job you can get, even if it's lower than your expectations. it's healthier emotionally to build up from the bottom than it is to hang by a rope from the ceiling. You need to find the level where you sit and can't fall. And then grow larger from there. Maybe university papers. Maybe night courses.
You have time to live your life this way and it's more secure.
And now: get out there, get your CV out there, lower your sights and take whatever you can get.
Sorry if that's a downer, but hell. We are born alone, we'll die alone if we're not careful, and we have to look after ourselves and face the cold hard facts. Keep pushing, keep trying, and keep waiting for the job that's a good fit; but for now get whatever you can.
