Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Chronically lonely and depressed and yet I thinkI am too selfish to be a friend to someone. Or maybe that and too busy. It's very frustrating. I am taking care of my mom too and that is draining the shit out of me. I'm so tired of my lonely dysfucntional life. My work hours are 730 to 6 pm 5 days a week and then I'm doing chores and taking care of mom after work and on my days off, like today, i just want to and need to do nothing. I can't even keep up with my friends on this site. I am so angry with my mother right now. God. I'm in therapy which I can barely make time for but when i go my therapist even agrees that i'm basically screwed. I can't afford to leave my job now and the situation with my mom is complex and I can't get her out of here very quickly. I realize that I've been too much of a people pleaser in my life, not selfish enough in some ways, and that has contributed to what I am dealing with now. Hindsight is 20 20 huh. Well, I guess I just wanted to vent. I actually am in a very dark place and have been for a long time. I have started to think or realize that life is just this way. It doesn't work out that well for some people and we don't always have control over it and when that happens. well, this is what it feels like. It feels very bad. I'm going to get myself a cup of tea or coffe or something and watch videos. Screw it. Just wanted my little miserable voice to be heard by someone out there. That means something. Thanks.

The best antidepressant is when my wishes are honored. An example, the faucet in my apartment was running although the knobs were turned shut all the way, and one of the pulling strings on my ceiling fan came off. As soon as I notified my maintenance man, he was quick to reply with the work order. RAPID response... he's getting my services around my apartment done. I appreciate my landlord and...

Hello,so I'm currently in a weird relationship with my long distance ex who I've never met in person and it's taking a toll on me. I've lost 15 pounds and lost my appetite, but I'm really attached to him. We've had a lot of problems and I think that has caused me to gain severe anxiety. I don't know if I should wait until it gets better or what. Everytime I've blocked him, it has tend to make me...

When you do have time to do something with yourself...you're too drained to cultivate new friendships, try new things. Even at times you start to feel guilty for wanting or having needs...or you get to a point that you trained not to have any at all.
You look around seeing people who are bit more selfish than you...with things you wished you had....and you wonder...I'm so giving, caring, self sacrificing, have been the perfect dutiful daughter...why haven't I been rewarded in life?
I figured out the answer - it's bc these selfish people knew how to put themselves first. I had a narcisstic sister who is in stark contrast different than me. I was raised to be codependent...take care of everyone...and she didn't click with that message.
I remember how instead of going to family functions, she would run off to vacation with her friends or boyfriend...while I did the dutiful thing by spending my vacation off work to "hang" with my parents...wtf.
I remember...when my mom was diagnosed with a life threatening illness, she sent flowers...but didn't even return home to care for her. I did.
I'm not condoning selfish behavior here...but I am just trying to show a point...that my sister put herself first.
It's also ironic...bc she often all tries to guilt me into coming to help her when she needs something...which since I was so nicely codependent...I would go...with my mom barking in my ear...she's your sister help her.
Then came the wake up call. I realize would my sister do this for me? No...the last time she tried to guilt me, I confronted her...and she hasn't tried since.
I also told my mom...that she should stop guilting me into doing things for others. I realize she wanted me to help others b/c she couldn't...so by guilting me into doing it...she was indirectly fulfilling her codependent needs. We also had a conversation...if you want to help someone...don't fucking con me into doing it.
I also had friends who I often would just go along with their plans. But I realize...why? So I had to confront them and say...we need to do things I like too. They understood.
Basically...when you're ready...you have to put down boundaries...and yes someone else is going to get uncomfortable, suffer, and have less care from you.
But those actions will return the energy you are giving back to you...and much deserving so.
I played the codependent, people pleaser game for so long...and still struggle at times...but when I speak up, draw lines in the sand...I feel so much better.
Treat yourself well...start small if you think making big changes are hard.
Buy yourself the most expensive, best quality teas...and snacks and enjoy your videos.
Then treat yourself to nice gifts. Even it's buying a more expensive item than you normally would go for.
By changing little things, we can show that we are important.
You're not alone...I feel we are the generation of people pleasers...that's why there's a booming self help industry writing books for people like us.
Sending you light and love!
Can you get temporary relief from the daily care of your mother? There are some social services that offer respite help for care-givers. Perhaps you can find some help so you can have time for yourself.
It is okay to vent, every once in awhile we can do it. You are not selfish, if you have friends that do not understand the hectic lifestyle then they aren't true friends. Is it possible to take five mins to watch a funny video to distract yourself. Have you tried meditation, it can help at times if you feel too overwhelmed.
