Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

My friend and neighbor is a good-hearted guy who will just about do anything for anyone when better judgement would be to use the word "No" once in a while. He's on disability for bipolar disorder but keeps busy doing handyman work and shopping for disabled people, almost anything people ask him to do.
He recently got an insurance settlement for a large amount of money and was buying new clothes, planning on going to an alcohol-free nightclub to meet some women.
Someone he barely knows asked him to tow a 25-foot trailer to a city 550 miles away. This is where "No" might have helped him out. The details are sketchy but the trailer broke down once or twice, he lost his phone. He left home with 7 or 8 thousand in his pocket. I have to wonder if any of that is left. He ended up getting arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest. Bailed out once and get arrested again.
I saw his best friend at his house earlier today, who was putting some stuff in his house, checking the mail, etc. and I could see a big bottle of pills on the table. When he leaves his pills at home and travels he gets in trouble like this.
I spoke with his public defender. He may end up staying in jail until July waiting for a court date. He really needs mental health treatment to get him back on medication, straighten him out and let him come home. He's got a mortgage and bills just like the rest of us.

I am so sorry your friend is going through all of this. It sounds like you have done the best you can to help him.

Hope and pray for the best. I am not sure there is anything you can do.

that's sad. He apparently needs a 'full time' guardian. Maybe the State will appoint him one.

Sunday he finally got home. He still had his van, so it didn't get lost to impound fees. He looked like crap and said he didn't feel all that great either. He let me give him a hug....haha, he's not Italian like me, probably not used to getting hugs from men. We were cooking a big family dinner at home, but he said he had food for dinner and didn't want me to bring him some. He's been coming and going the last few days, getting his life back on track after almost a month in jail. I'm so glad he's back at home with his friends who care about him.

he's very fortunate to have a good friend like you who cares about him.

I agree with Splitpea. You are truly a good friend. Some people have rel problems handling money and as a person on disability he should be able to get a "payee" of his choice- someone that will make sure the bills are paid out of whtever amount he gets and help him learn to budget and he should definately be encouraged to stay on his meds or see his doctor if he thinks changes need to be mad. I had to stop taking my meds 2 days prior to a medical test and I thought I was going to go crazy... Couldn't eat, sleep or even think... I was fine after the test and getting back on everything. He could have stopped taking his meds and had as severe, or worse of a reaction to stopping them. Stick with your friend and let him know you care... It may help more than you realize... God bless you and your friend I'm praying for both of you... Always, Karen
